10 Common Phobias

Agoraphobia

Agoraphobia

Fear of: finding oneself in a seemingly inescapable place, like a wide-open space, a crowded shopping mall, an elevator or on a bridge.

Agoraphobics are afraid they won't be able to control the panic attack that occurs when they find themselves in one of these situations. To avoid that feeling of helplessness, many agoraphobics avoid those situations at all costs — even if it means refusing to leave their homes. The phobia usually develops in teenagers or young adults, but is sometimes seen in children and older adults, as well.
