Several weeks ago I developed a persistent sensation of having a pill stuck in my throat. The sensation is getting more pronounced each week. A laryngoscopy indicated no abnormalities. Barium swallow shows that the liquid goes down the left side of my esophagus. I have no significant history of reflux, no visible swelling, and no other symptoms. My alcohol consumption averages three beers a day. My concern is that I may have esophageal cancer. Unfortunately, the earliest appointment I can get with a local gastroenterologist is over a month away. I'm not looking for a diagnosis here--just wondering if I need to push for an earlier appointment with another doctor.

Dear Michael,
The normal laryngoscopy and barium swallow would argue against esophageal cancer as the cause for your symptoms.
