What happens when your baby passes Meconium inside the womb

If your baby has a bowel movement in your womb it will be meconium, a very concentrated tarry poo. It will be obvious to your care givers if your baby has passed meconium as the amniotic fluid( Your waters) will have a green tinge to them.

A baby who passes meconium and subsequently inhales any has a possibility of ending up with meconium aspiration syndrome. If a baby develops MAS they could need anything from suction to assistance with breathing equipment and time in the neonatal unit. Is any of this worth it because you wanted to see your baby a couple of days early?

Many places on the internet will tell you that Castor Oil is safe or use the old adage " I took it and my child was fine!". What about all of the babies who were not fine because of Castor Oil?

Why do people say Castor Oil will bring on my Labor?

Castor oil is known in the medical fraternity as a very effective laxative and bowel stimulant. The way that Castor oil works ( sometimes) to induce labor is that it sets of cramps whilst working as a laxative. The cramps are meant to trigger off contractions, something you may have found happens naturally as practice contractions whilst taking normal bowel movements. The idea is that the cramps set off significant contractions as to start off true labor. This sounds all so very practical until you realize that first of all Castor oil is not so easy to drink and feels like you are drinking a bottle of grease, I know because I have had 5 babies and have been misinformed enough to try this method, to no avail. Oh the contractions may come but you could be in for a false labor for a whole load of nothing, left disappointed, infuriated and even more fed up than you were the day before, only now you are tired and probably have a sore bum (See next paragraph!).

Secondly, even if you get this awful stuff down your neck, you will soon wish you had not when the contents of your body and then some fall out of your anus and not always whilst you are on the toilet either. Why lose the small amount of dignity you had left to hold on to?!

Thank u for comments. I'm a ftm so I figured I would go into labor before the 40 wks but so far my baby is too comfortable & i was just trying to avoid the NEED for a c-section in case I don't dilate I've been 1 1/2 cm dilated for two weeks & i was wondering what successful stories you ladies had to share regarding going into labor naturally without getting induced at the hospital.  So far I've tried castor oil & it helped unplug my cervical mucus. I have a Dr appt today so hopefully I've dilated more. *fingers crossed * I want to meet my baby boy already

Well everyone says walk and I'm not 100% sure but for my first child I walked A LOT I was told at 5 months not yo walk as much but I had to since I had no ride or any money for bus so I always walked to store doctor etc. And my son was born a month early so he was premature they told me it was from all my walking. So I'd go with walk as much as possible.

Take castor oil and go on a long walk. It isn't dangerous to your baby.. That is a myth. I have done endless research on it. Just take a safe amount. Plus it makes you poop which is awesome if you are terrified of pooping on the table

I thought I read it as saying c section earlier. My mistake.

Don't take castor oil. It's very dangerous because it can cause your fetus to pass its first bowel movement in the womb. If your LO aspirates the meconium it can be deadly. I would stick to sex and nipple stimulation.

It sounds like you have a preference that is not being respected. The doctor nor anyone cannot force you to do anything you don't want to. You can forego the c section because you are not at risk at 40 weeks (unless you are at risk then yes go with what has been adviced. But even then you can ask around for second opinions) don't let them go against what you feel is right. Begin walking. Castor oil. Nipple stimulation. Sex. Those help. Look some stuff up. Im sure there's more.

I walked with my first and went into labor. Nipple stimulation might work. My sister took casteroil and went into labor. Try to relax. Take a bath maybe.

I don't think she meant a c section. Just induction. With my son I had a really big spicy meal. And he was born the next day. That was 39 weeks

Can I ask why you want to go into labour when you're currently scheduled for a c section?
