8 ADHD Culprits Lurking in Your Home

Paint On Your Walls

Paint On Your Walls
Culprit: Lead
Found in: Peeling, chipping or cracking interior and exterior lead-based paint; household dust and ground soil containing lead paint particles
What it does: Two recent studies showed a link between children with high levels of lead in their blood and ADD/ADHD symptoms like hyperactivity, impulsivity and inattention. In one study the amount of lead detected was about 1/10th of the considered "safe" level, showing harm from even low-level lead exposure.
Fix it: If your home was built before 1978, the paint may contain lead. Get it tested by a lead-based paint professional (or contact your landlord if you rent). Contact the National Lead Information Center (NLIC) for a list of certified professionals in your area. Clean up any flaking paint chips, patch up or paint over cracks, and dust and mop often to reduce exposure.
