MYTH: Babies of HIV-Infected Mothers Always Get HIV

HIV-infected women can pass the virus to their children during pregnancy, childbirth, or through breastfeeding. However expectant mothers with HIV can takes steps to greatly reduce the risk of infecting their children. HIV-infected women who undergo treatment early in pregnancy and avoid breastfeeding can reduce the risk of transmission to 2 percent.
