What Happens During an Asthma Attack?

People with asthma have chronically inflamed airways. An asthma attack occurs when something (an allergy, air pollution, exercise) make that inflammation worse. The muscles surrounding the airways constrict, and the lining of the airways swells. Both of those things together reduce the amount of air that can travel through your lungs, making it hard to breathe.
