I’m a woman with diabetes who’s having problems climaxing. What can I do?

You’re not alone: Close to half of all women with diabetes experience sexual complications. The causes can be physical and emotional. Here’s what you can try:

• Keep your blood glucose level in a healthy range. It is hard to respond sexually when you feel tired and run down.
• Use a vaginal lubricant. Many women with diabetes experience vaginal dryness. Additional lubricant may help you feel more comfortable and thus more stimulated.
• Talk to your partner. Many women with diabetes take longer to become physically aroused. Invite your partner to participate in additional foreplay.
• Practice with yourself. Masturbating can help remind your body how to respond positively to sexual touch.
• Use reliable birth control. Some women fear they might become pregnant when their diabetes control is not at its best. That concern can make it more difficult to enjoy sexual activity.
• Meet with a therapist who can help you identify emotional or relationship issues that may be interfering with your sexual response.
