Nature’s wonder-fruit has done it again. Adding to the growing body of literature on berries’ brain benefits, a study published in the April 2012 journal Annals of Neurology showed that blueberries and strawberries, which are high in plant chemicals called flavonoids, appear to reduce cognitive decline in older adults. The results suggest that brain aging could be delayed by up to 2.5 years in older adults who consume more flavonoid-rich berries. Flavonoids have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that may combat the toll stress and inflammation take on the brain.
