Ouch! What Bug Just Bit You?

Preventing Bug Bites

Preventing Bug Bites

You definitely don't want to stay indoors all summer to avoid a bug bite — so here are some tips to keep bugs off you.

Apply bug spray as directed on exposed areas of skin. Look for a spray that contains one of these active ingredients: DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR3535.

Dress appropriately in light-colored, long-sleeved shirts and long pants. Tuck your shirt into your pants and your pants into your socks whenever possible. Wear boots or closed toed shoes; avoid wearing sandals.

Check for ticks after spending time in grassy or wooded areas. Pay special attention to the armpits, in and around the ears, inside the belly button, the back of the knees, in and around the scalp and around the waist.

Avoid bug hotspots. If you see any of these bugs where you are, it’s likely there are more nearby. Take precautions like keeping your lawn trimmed and your yard tidy and free of any standing water. This will help keep bugs from making your home their home.
