Expired Adderall

I stopped taking my Adderall for a few months several years ago.  I got my prescription filled during that time and the pills ended up in the back of my closet.  I didn't give them any thought for the last 3 years.  They are still in the original, factory sealed, bottles.

Now, I pay for my prescription out of pocket and this much Adderall would cost me about $100.  So, I don't want to throw them out if they are any good.  I just forgot about them.

I know that the pharmacy says to discard unused prescriptions a year after they were dispensed. But these are still in the sealed bottles with an expiration date that was 6 months ago.

Has anyone taken Adderall that was that old?  Do you guys think they will still be any good?

If the expiration was only 6 months ago, I would think they still should be good.  Most pills have expiration dates that are set really early.  Since they are in a sealed bottle and out of the light, the chances of degradation are pretty low.

I wanted to answer this more specifically, as a pharmacy professional.  The adderall will lose efficacy over time, but slowly.  As far as I can tell, and you seem to have discovered, it is not dangerous.

However, it bothers me that others have stated that "it should be fine if kept in low light and unopened."  This is an EXTRAORDINARILY dangerous idea for certain medications including tricyclic antibiotics and aspirin.  Please take more caution besides the random musings of the internet.

I tried them today.  They still seemed 100% as potent as they should be.  I guess 3 years in the back of the closet won't do them any harm.  Saved me $100!!!

I have a 6 year old expired ones. What do you think of me trying that. They were in the original Prescription jar. In home closet at normal conditions. ..

Need a real answer bro. ...
No clue,  thats pretty old.  Why bother.   Either you are going to start taking them and will need more or you have no reason to take them.
Kinda late, i just saw your reply, I ate one 15 mg .. 20 min ago.. . .  dont know what to expect. . .

22 HRS later UPDATE : update on consuming " ( 1 ) - 15 mg (5) YEARS expired  Adderall capsule. (the one with white beads or balls inside capsule)".... it was not a tablet.  it was a capsule.

NOTICE : I DONT ASSUME SAME RESULTS WILL HAPPEN TO YOU. SO DONT THINK THAT JUST CUZ I DIDNT GET ****** YOU WILL NOT EITHER.   My assumption was that i would not get ill from one pill .. but risk was that it was 5 years old expired. yes 5 years old. I read random articles online, I took a bet that it might be just low potency of the pill due to being so old.
According to the articles it also said you may not get hungry. or have desire to eat even if you are hungry.

FACT:    I am not feeling hungry enough to go and eat. WARNING.. if you are a lazy *** who only do **** if you feel like it. dont even bother. Disciplined person who will eat even if they dont want to can do this kinda ****. Other wise you will not eat even though you are hungry.  Like now I am feeling hungry yet I just sat here and wrote all this information.  My family member just ask me if I ate or not and said come eat.. so I will be disciplined and go eat for the sake of eating....

-------------------------------------------MY Effects / Side effects: --------------------------------------------------
Side NOTE:      I AM NOT DIAGNOSED WITH ADHD FROM A PROFESSIONAL. I took it for trial to see if i can study and prep my self for a heavily technical interview...

TOTAL TIME OF NOT SLEEPING would be approximately from 30+ hrs.  But i am counting from the moment I took the pill .. to now.. it is now 22 hrs and counting.

1. Had absolutely no sleep since 22 hrs ago..  (22 hrs ago I took the pill).   I am still not feeling drowse , How ever My eyes are feeling a bit like burning from lack of sleeping...  I did'nt die, and I did'nt fall ill. so far...

I DONT recommend taking more than 1 pill of 15 mg.

REASONS ARE :

1. you may get ill especially if pill is old as mine. 2. you may not sleep for 2 days in a row causing unknown damage to your health.

Concerns:     When will I fall asleep? ... my predictions is after 24 hrs of alertness. ..

Concentration:    I am still not sure if I was heavily focused.  but I could not sleep after trying hard. I was trying to learn software but trying to multi task .. became a distraction of it .

Confirmed:  1 pill  kept me awake non stop. I am able to do work / get errands on computer done but I distract my self  such as, Paying All my bills or setting up scheduled payment, made excel sheet of expenses, but odd part was that I wanted to actually study / and Refresh my Technical skills for an interview. Yet I find my self still avoiding my main work to do all other works that come in front of me.

CONCLUSION: ITS SELF DISCIPLINE. You and only You must focus and stay on your target task. Other wise you will act like a ADHD person.. which is doing everything other than what you need to do.. . I am not a diagnosed add/adhd person. I only did this to see if i can get my study session on. My advice is :  Avoid falling into trap of doing other errands . Stick to your plan. This pill didnt help me focus on one thing but rather makes me do what ever comes in front of me.  Only thing i can say happened for sure is  that I am unable to sleep for 24 hrs.  Which means I usually fall  asleep when i feel tired. this time i cant do that because its not even possible to fall asleep.

I will update again...  Next reply.. I will state if this pill is a miracle drug or just a super Caffeine pill substitute.

the U.S. Army has a special book giving expiration dates that it follows. These go beyond the dates we are given. My impression is that the dates we are given may have to do with profitability. Cynical, I know, but there is every reason to be cynical nowadays - unfortunately.

Thanks to both of you.  I wasn't able to find any other threads where anyone actually said that they tried expired Adderall.  I guess people just don't let it sit around that long.

I'll let the forum know how well it still works.  This might be an internet first.

Kinda of doubt that you will get much feedback from people with the same problem.  My experience has been that you are pretty unique in having a bottle that has expired.  Most (if not all) people tend to use their meds up way before the expiration date.

I would trust Sandman on this. There are pharmacists in my family and all of us have used "expired" prescriptions. The important thing is to keep the medication in its original sealed state and away from light or moisture.

Thanks.  You always give very thoughtful answers.  I was thinking the same thing but I was hoping to get some opinions from people who've taken expired adderall.
