My 3 an half year old does not use verbal skills...

My son (born 12-30-2005) is still not using his verbal skills. I have been a stay-at-home mom his entirer life. He has a very bad temper, when he does not get his way or what he wants. He loves playing with trucks, cars, etc. He will make the sound "voom-voom". He has is "own lanuage" as my husband and I call it. He just rambles made up words. The only words we understand is, "Mommy, Daddy, BaBa, Milk, Jouce (juice), Baby, Puppy, Bird, Play, This, That, Woof, Meow, Moo-Cow, No, Okay, Trash, Bat-Tem (Bath-Time), GiGi (my mom's nick name), Welo (spanish slang for grandpa-my husband's dad), Toy Story, Buzz, Woody". He can not speak senentces. He has consumed more TV shows (Nick Jr., PBS Sprout) then needed. Also, he watches movies (ToyStory, Cars, Shrek, Ice Age, Wall-E, Bee Movie, etc.) mainly  animated cartoons. We can comunicate with him... for example: We ask him to help take something to the trash and he will go straight to the trash with that item. We ask him to kiss his sister (6 mths) and he will give her a kiss. He understands a few commands. Also, we are starting to point and say what we are pointing to and he tries to say the word. He is not potty-trained. We say go to the potty and he says "No!" but, we still take him anyway and he will go pee-pee on the potty. He sometimes screams, rather then talks. My parents and my in-laws think it's his hearing and that we need to get his ears checked. His pediatrician said at his 4 yr. check-up that he would evaluate him and check his ears. I'm very concerned and want him to start developing. If, there is anyway you could advise me on what to do in the mean time, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks, so much!

Hi!  I couldn't agree more with borabora.  I think it would be an excellent idea to have your son evaluated by a speech pathologist.  Your doctor can refer you and this is usually covered by insurance (assuming you live in the US).  You could also contact your local school system that by law can evaluate children for speech delays or other delays and if warrented, you child could enter their early intervention program.  Your son's expressive language sounds behind but I am glad that he understands commands. All children develop at different rates most definately but when one falls so far outside of the norm----  it is important to act on it.  Early intervention can change the course of a child's life.  My oldest child has a developmental delay called sensory integration disorder.  We've done occupational therapy to address it and he is functioning very well now.  Sensory can look somewhat like add/adhd in behavior and also affects the nervous system.  Medication, however, won't help it.  Your son probably does have meltdowns because of his communication problems----  that can be very frustrating for a child.  I would start by addressing his speech and see where that takes you.  Again, I can't say enough in terms of how important early intervention is!  My son is so much happier now.  Much luck to you.

Your son may have problems other than not speaking in sentences, so I will only address the latter. I have lots of progeny - 17 in toto. Three of them did not speak coherently (and one not at all) until they passed the age of three. I have no idea why. But they all spoke eventually, are of normal intelligence and developing properly. Your son's  anger may have to do with his not being able to get his ideas across. In any case, if you are concerned you should have him evaluated by a doctor.

I would consider talking with your doctor about taking him to a speech pathologist in addition to the hearing check at the four year check-up. Sometimes children need help in order to produce speech, like I did.  I went to a pathologist for a few years to produce speech then to refine it, after my hearing was determined to be normal.

Here is a great article about speech development and what parents can do to help their children if they suspect a delay:
