Naltrexone WARNING

Ok so I got a phone call today from a friend back home who has also struggled with opiates for awhile now. She has a 250 mg oxycodone habit and has tried to quit numerous times using suboxone. Well after her last relapse her doctor decided to put her on Naltrexone. He told her that she would not be able to take opiates while on the drug. A few days later she relapse with 5 30mg roxicets within a few hour period. She began feeling ill and ended up in the bathroom trying to throw up. When she was able to it was all blood and she began to choke on the blood in her lungs and throat. Luckily her mom was home and  found her laying on the bathroom floor. She was rushed to the ER and put on a ventilator. The doctor ran blood tests and found that she had used opiates. She had figured that this drug was similar to suboxone and at worst she would not feel any high from the pills. Instead it almost took her life and the doctors said 10 more minutes and she would be dead. This was a wake up call for her and she has been clean since she was admitted into the hospital thursday. She spent the whole weekend there and is no longer taking this drug. My question is does anyone know anything about it? What different from suboxone and how can they give an addict that can so easily make the mistake of relapse a drug that will kill you if you do. She said she was in the doctors office for 5 mins before she was given a script for the drug. A few words were said and the DR. assumed that we are all perfect addicts and wont make a mistake. Thats not right.

Nauty, nope she was given this in a pill form and not properly informed by her doctor what she was getting into. She can't wait to go back in on Tuesday with her discharge papers from her 3 day ER stay.

.Naltrexone  blocks the effects of  opioids ( that includes morphine, heroin or codeine). It competes with these drugs for opioid receptors in the brain. It was originally used to treat dependence on opioid drugs but has recently been approved by the FDA as treatment for alcoholism

In a much lower doses its being used for all sorts of things MS,fibromyalgia, crohn's and many others .It going to be like any other drug .Know what you are putting into your body and the possible side effects and outcome or many people it has made a major difference for the positive in there lives.

I am waiting to see if it will be helpful for TMJ .

I thought naltrex.....was only given by injection.  Mostly used for alcoholism, but it is in trial stage for Opiates.......

that's my understanding.

I'm glad to hear she is ok, and wonder about this reaction to her using while on it??  not a good thing.....

luv,
nauty.............

P.s.......good to see you back GeorgiaPeach...:-))

I take naltrexone. It only blocks the high, not the action of the drug. Big difference. If the doctor didn't explain this, then he's at fault for that.
