The 46 year heroin addict.

I am afraid that I have to burst your bubbles. I was at the mall again this morning at Sears to get myself a hat for golfing, which I did. While having coffee at the food court I noticed that same man  (46 year heroiun user) talking to a lady at one of the tables. I went over to say hello and when he saw me he got up and left the food court in a hurry. He left so quickly, that I asked the woman if there was something wrong with him. While talking to this woman I found out that he had told her that he was an alchoholic for thirty five years and was now a born again Christian. He also told her that he had lost all his possesions in a house fire at the boarding house where he roomed. She said she was just about to give him some money for a hotel until the insurance company got back to him. I went and spoke to the mall security and it turns out that several people have complained about him and the security people have been trying to find out what he looks like. I gave them a description of the man and left feeling very disappointed. What puzzles me is that he never asked me for anything. Maybe I was a test. He was trying the new one on me to see how it sounded. I think he realized that if he said was working for the Salvation Army he must be getting paid and therefore asking for money was just not right so he let it drop and went on to a new scam. I wonder what he will be tomorrow.

I am glad you told us what you found out...but sad also. I think maybe he wasn't exactly testing you....but (in experiences i have had being conned) that he was waiting for you to "offer" the money so "technically" he never asked you for any. It may be possible that he has some sort of conscience....or knows of some kind of law / rule that they don't ask. I don't think he was testing you b/c he sounded really experienced b/c that story was way too good. I wish it was true. Side note though....cons like him should at least use the same story so if you had asked that lady at the mall and you guys had heard the same story then you would not have been so suspicous.

I have a relative that always gives money to people like that or with the signs etc... and his friend told him once that he was dumb for doing that b/c they were probably going to buy drugs or liquor with it and my cousin said...I did what was right in my heart...it is now between that person and The Lord what they do with the money. My husband almost always gives something on that basis. (i don't roll down my window b/c i am a woman alone in the car w/a baby gotta be careful)

Ok....there is my 2 cents on the story. JoAnn
