Hi, yes, in the UK, you can buy shotguns, legally, for shooting (ie deer, pheasants etc) , as long as you don't have a criminal record, checks are made etc, and there are gun clubs, I think you can buy pretty powerful airguns and the such like. And don't get me wrong, here in London, there is a large gang culture, and you hear of shootings regularly, just the other day a 15 year old kid gunned someone down. And it's so regular, it weren't even big news. Anymore. If you are caught with a gun, it's a 5 year sentence, with a year added for every bullet found. But, if you want to find a gun, you could find one, since the European Union evolved, guns have been flooded via the now defunct iron curtain. I know what your saying about protecting yourself. The UK, yes, it has a gun culture, it's just underground, but for hunting you can get a shotgun.

Yeah, all cultures are different and have different beliefs. I'm sure if I lived somewhere where guns were illegal it would seem crazy to see people walking around with them. You probably thought everyone was in some kind of militia or something!

Not all states allow concealed and carry. The state I live in does not. You aren't allowed to carry any firearm in public. If you are transporting a gun in your vehicle it can't be loaded and either the gun or the ammo has to be out of arms reach.

In the states that allow concealed and carry you have to go through a safety course in order to get your "concealed and carry permit". Just because you legally own a gun doesn't mean you can legally carry it ow your person.

In most of those states if you see someone committing a crime and are in fear of your life or fellow citizens life it is legal to protect yourself. There have been many innocent people's lives saved because of this.

I guess my main reasoning for guns being legal is regardless of gun laws the criminals will always have their guns. They more than likely have illegally own a gun anyways. So, if they did ban guns, the honest responsible people will give their guns up but yet the criminals will still have theirs. The crime rate would be the same because it's not the honest, responsible people committing the crime. The crime rate may even go up because the criminals wouldn't have to worry about an armed citizen protecting their own life by shooting back.

I'm curious about hunting in the UK. Are people not allowed to hunt since guns are illegal to own?

Point taken. Apparently, here in the UK, 80% of the population own a baseball bat but only 3% know the rules to baseball. It just seems mad that you can go in a shop and buy a gun, I know they do checks and that, but I remember when I was in AZ, seeing all these guys walking round with a piece it freaked me out, but it's just different cultures thats all, I  guess.

Guns don't only kill but also save lives. Criminals are going to have guns regardless if they are illegal so why shouldn't innocent people be able to protect themselves? All gun laws do is take protection away from honest, responsible people that don't go around shooting people. Gun laws don't take guns away from the criminal because most own them illegally anyways and always will.

So, if someone pulls the trigger and shoots at someone, it's the guns fault? A gun is only as dangerous as the person behind it.

I completely agree with you Eagle and Lesa. There will always be guns whether they are legal or illegal. If they do become illegal the only ones that will be affected by this would be the honest, responsible people that use them for the right reasons. Hardly any thug legally owns a gun and law enforcement has no record of them owning one so they won't be turning over anything. Criminals will always have guns no matter what laws get passed. Banning guns isn't go to prevent crime. All it will do is create more victims.

There are studies that show that once a state started allowing conceal and carry that the crime rate dropped. These thugs probably thought twice about committing armed robbery when the victim may just shoot back.

Here's a story about a 70 year old man that stopped a robbery and possible saved some innocent people's life because he had a concealed and carry permit. There are many other stories of innocent people's lives being saved because of our right to bear arms.

I'm all for honest, responsible adults to carry concealed weapons. It may just save my life one day.

my sons also grew up respecting them and being taught about gun safety. we use to take then camping up at Eagle Lake so they could target practice. by the time they were 8 they knew how to break down the 22's clean them and assemble. we have had rifles all their lives but the hand gun was not bought till the were 16 and 17. I also believe if they took the guns "although this will never happen as we would bury them first" Only the criminals would be armed Then who is going to protect my family ? we support the NRA..........

I started teaching gun safety to my kids at a young age. I think it's very important. If every gun owner taught their children gun safety there wouldn't be nearly as many accidents. It seems that whenever you hear about a child accidentally discharging a gun and injury another child it is usually from some city folk that only has one gun and thought they had it hidden. You rarely here it being a child of a hunter who owns many guns. I'm not saying this only pertains to hunters or vice versa but I'm sure you get the point. I think the reason behind this is because if someone hunts they normally start their kids hunting at a young age. And you know if they take their kids hunting they teach them gun safety and reiterate it before every hunt or before target practice. My dad did the same thing to me. Seeing a gun was no big deal. I knew better than to touch it because I was taught not too. Now, at a young age if I never new my dad owned a gun, was never taught gun safety and then actually came across one hidden somewhere I probably would've of excitedly picked it up thinking I was Jesse James or something. Who knows what could've happened. The point I'm getting at is I was taught not to touch one without permission from an adult, the safety aspects of handling one along with the possible dangers. Since I was taught all of this, even if I would've ran across one without an adult being present, I knew to leave it alone and let my parents know about it.

Like I mentioned before, it's not so much the gun that is dangerous. It's the person behind it. Sure, it can be dangerous if certain precautions aren't took but there are many things in life that are dangerous. Think of wood shop in high school. They aren't going to let you start using the table saw without being taught how to safely operate it. Another simple example is driving. Just because there are accidents all the time along with some irresponsible people causing some of these accidents doesn't mean they should take our driver's license away and it doesn't mean we aren't going to let our kids drive. It all comes down to teaching the dangers and the safety aspects of it and it is no different with firearms. They are only as dangerous as the person holding it.

Here in IL before buying a gun you have to have a FOID card. When you apply for a FOID card the State Police run a background check before you receive it. Once you go to buy a gun you have to present your FOID card and then there is a 10 days waiting period. If you are ever convicted of a felony, you lose your FOID card and the State Police will come and confiscate your guns.

I pray that we never lose our right to bear arms. If we ever do lose that right the innocent are going to be the only ones that aren't able to protect our family. The criminals are still going to have their stolen, illegal weapons and will still be committing the same crimes, if not more. They've been trying to get IL to be a conceal and carry state. We keep getting closer and closer each time it goes up for vote. If it weren't for Chicago, we'd already have it. If it does pass, I guarantee some of these criminals will think twice about pulling their stolen gun out on an innocent person because this innocent and responsible person may finally be able to protect their own life.

If our right to bear arms does ever get taken away there will still be the same amount of crime, if not more. It's not the responsible doing the shooting and the criminals will always find a way to get a hold of illegal weapons. Nothing will change for them. It will only change for us.

I have quite the armory and will continue adding to it. It's not just for protection but more of a hobby. But if anyone ever tries breaking into my house my hobby will keep my family alive and there will be one less murderer on the street. The chance of me ever having to use a gun is very slim but I'd rather not take that chance.

I keep all of my guns locked up. There's nothing dangerous about having a gun in the house as long as you're responsible about it. They are never loaded until I'm ready to take a shot or if I'm in the woods hunting. If you follow just a few basic safety rules the chance of anything happening is very slim.

1. Never point your gun at anything you don't intend to shoot.
2. Keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you are ready to fire.

Sure, a gun can be dangerous but it's normally the person behind the gun that makes that gun dangerous.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT WHEN WE CONSIDER GUN CONTROL:

This is why all enemies, foreign and domestic, want to see America disarmed:
The World's Largest Army...America's Hunter's!

A blogger added up the deer license sales in just a handful of states and arrived at a striking conclusion:

There were over 600,000 Hunters this season in the state of Wisconsin.  Allow me to restate that number...
Over the last sever months, Wisconsin's Hunters became the EIGHTH Largest ARMY in the World!
More men under arms than in Iran.
More than in France and Germany combined.

These men deployed to the woods of a single American State to hunt with firearms, and no one was KILLED.
That number pales in comparison to the 750,000 who Hunted the woods of Pennsylvania and to Michigan's 700,000 who Hunters, all of whom have now returned home.
Toss in a quarter a million Hunters in West Virginia and it literally establishes the fact that the Hunters of those four states alone would comprise the LARGEST ARMY in the world.

(4 states =2.3 Million Hunters)
America will forever be safe from foreign invasion with that kind of home-grown firepower.

Hunting -- it's not just a way to fill the frezzer.  IT'S A MATTER OF NATIONAL SECURITY.

That's the law in your state I guess but that's not the law in NM.  Here you can buy a gun and then you need to wait several days for a background check until you can take the gun out of the store. It's not that way everywhere and it really needs to be.  Look at what happened in Arizona last January, with all those politcos being shot at and killed. That was a horrible tradgedy...

Why?just curious

Here you have to have a good reason to own a gun,you also have to have psyche tests and criminal checks which can take weeks,

My son goes to a gun club, just shoots at targets though and hires the gun for the day,I will never allow a gun in my house, never have, never will.
I'm nearly 50 and have never felt at any time that I needed a gun.
