Detoxing Off Methadone

My husband is in the military and we are based in Hawaii, near the "Walter Reid Hospital of the Pacific". Whatever the doctors plan for you, you have to follow or my husband could have some reprocussions from his chain of command, So this is the reason my husband and I are secretly detoxing off my pain meds. I have been on Ms Contin since June of 2007 and for breakthrough pain pain I am giving Oxycodone immediate release 5 mg. 3 a day. I have recently been switched to Methadone 10 mg. 5 times a day and the oxycodone for breakthrough pain. I was on methadone back in 2000 but when I came off I checked into the hospital. I am looking for the best way to setox at home. I thought I could work out a system like:
2 every 4 hours for a week, 2 every 6 hours for a week, 2 every 8 hours for a week, 2 every 10 hours for a week, 2 every 12 hours for a week, then 1 a day for a week and then 1/2 a tablet once a day for 2 weeks.
I am also percribed klonopin and lunesta so that should take the edge off I am hoping. Does this sound like a good plan or os there a better way to do it.

Also- my son's top dose on Methadone was 95mgs and he tapered 2mgs a week over a year to get down to the 15mgs before doing the WD and jump to suboxone.

My son is detoxing from methadone with the help of suboxone. He tapered the methadone to 15mgs a day, went CT for three days and then started at 16 mgs of Suboxone. Over the last 60 days he has slowly tapered and is now down to .25mgs of the Sub a day. Over the next month he will slowly  wd from the sub altogether. He has had 0 WDs during his long slow taper. Good luck to you. Methadone is a bear to quit.

that is an extremely fast taper and you would be better off just going cold turkey at that rate..I need to say this ..and i am sure there will be 1 or 2 that disagree but there really isn't much of a difference in comming off 10 mg cold or 65..the w/ds are horrid as i am sure you know..There is nothing that I have taken that took the edge off the w/ds from methadone..I went cold off of 65 mg..and had taperd from 70mg..that took 2 months to taper 5 mg..and I still felt like ****..I say GO for it.You can try and taper but be ready for the w/ds...i feel like tapering just prolongs the agony especially where methadone is concerned..

The best way is to taper slowly! I am not too good with methadone. So I didn't answer this. Just so you know. Usually your question will get answered very quickly here. If you don't get a response within an hour, RE-phrase your post in a new one. Like "HELP best way to get off Methadone!"

that is a really fast taper from methadone.  you will deffinately feel strong wd symptoms if you do it that way.  i felt really strong symptoms just going down by 1 pill a week.  it is the most difficult of all the addictive drugs to quit.  if you can possibly get a dr's help, do it.

not sure about detoxing from methodone as i have not taken it before. But an alternative you may want to consider is suboxone. I was just prescribed suboxone to get off bad vicodin habit. today is the first day. We shall see but I have been reading several posts that people have done very well on it. I noticed that alot of people taking this were previously takingmethodone and switched to this. It may be a little difficult to get for you if you are trying to do it secretly but whichever dr is giving the methodone would probably give you the suboxone instead. Dr has to be specifically approved with FDA to prescribe it for addiction.  I am not sure though about the klonpin being taken with it. Also from what i read, you cannot take any other narcotics with it otherwise it causes severe withdraw symptoms. do some searching for suboxone on the net. some very good sites with a lot of info.
