I tried to taper, but it wasn't successful for me. It required too much discipline and self control.. Two things I was lacking whenI was trying to get clean. For me cold turkey was the way to go. Plan on a week of feeling ill, with intense cravings. Then immerse yourself in recovery through NA AA or other support programs.

hey roxane, i tapered when i first got off pills, it worked very well for me.  however i was Extremely disciplined about it, stuck to it like clockwork, etc.  You cannot deviate from a taper At All.  I did it because i was coming off a lot of pills per day ... still had dreadful w/ds, but prolly would have been a lot worse for me ct'ing.  good luck

A taper will work IF you have someone you know and trust that will help you stick to the plan, and that plan should be something a doctor puts together. Also, something to consider...Tapering is easier on you physically, but it strings out the mental struggle and, in the end, that is much more difficult to deal with. The mental side of recovery is what leads most of us to relapse.

tapering will work, but you have to be organized about it and willing to follow thru.  Many have tried and many have failed...however, those that can seem to do well.  You will still have withdrawals, but they are usually milder and easier to manage.  We can't give taper schedules here...a doctor should be able to help.  The idea is to drop a small amount over a few or more days to let your body get used to the change and then drop again, etc.  If you have someone to help with the pills that is great, but if not...that is where many fail.

If it's opiates, as an addict I can't possibly control the use of it. If you try, give it to a person who, no matter what, will only give you the dose on your taper chart. Prior to tapering, cut off all your suppliers.
