10+ years on Norco

I have severe back pain, leg pain, and herniated discs in my back. Also surgeries on both my hands, and a shoulder injury. I am prescribed 360 10mg norco a month. I take 6-7 a day, and would like to try to get off them completely, but I don't know if I can take the pain I have without medication. I also take oxycodone 15mg 2x a day, and a 10mg valium at night to help me sleep, and also for pain in my muscles & joints. I have cut down to 200 norco a month, and want to get off them, but don't want to be sick and in pain. Help!

One thing I wanted to mention, it's difficult to really tell at this point how much pain you will be in once you detox from your meds. You won't know this until you've withdrawn from them.  Alot of people have found that, once they are free of all of their prescribed meds, OTC's like Tylenol and Advil work wonders!

Hi and Welcome to MH.  Sorry for the delay in posting but sometimes that happens if alot of people post at one time.

First, I would recommend stopping one medication at a time.  10 years is a long time, but your doses of each medication arent terribly high. We don't offer tapering schedules here, but its not a magic formula.  You simply take less each day, wait for your body to adjust and then lower your dose again.  Or you could cold turkey the medications, (EXCEPT for the valium);
it would be more painful, but the duration of the withdrawals would be shorter.
I'm not sure if it would be better to start with the hydrocodone or the
oxycodone.  I don't know if it makes any difference.

Are you wanting to taper off of the valium as well?  I would do this last, as it will make your withdrawals from the opiates less painful.  Valium is a MUST TAPER drug.  You will want to taper under a doctor's supervision if possible and SLOW is key.  There is a risk of seizure if you taper too quickly.

If you look to the lower right of your screen you will find the Thomas recipe and the Amino acid protocol.  There is a wealth of information there that will help make your detox less difficult.

Post back so we know how you're doing.

Well wishes to you....

Sandy :)
