Four Months

I was just wondering if there are any people out there who have attempted/succeeded with getting off opiates after being on opiates for a period of about four-six months. I haven't seen too many postings from people like that and I was wondering why. I'd like to hear how it worked out for those people. I have heard that it might not be as difficult as for those who have been on opiates for an extended period of time. Thank you and I pray every day for everyone who is working to beat this.

Hello..good question...

I was on Vics/Soma for about 18 months...but I think I was an addict from day one..just based on how it made me feel and the desire to take more....

logic says it should be easier since it was a short run...but it doesnt take long for the mind/body/soul to get accustomed to the opiates..as said,,,you're faking your body out with synthetic "feel good",,,,so your body needs to start producing its own when you stop,,,,takes a few days,,,

then there are folks with years of using that have mild detox...too many factors are involved,,,health, age, amount, tolerance for pain....etc..

sound like you're nervous about all of it...dont be..a lot of us have come to the "other side" starting jsut the way you are,,,,,,

here for ya man

Jack, i was on about the same as you, but for years. I went ct from 80mg... it was tough, but on day 36, im doing very well! Actually surprised myself. I used to chew the pills too... yeah, genius. Like most, my first week was awful, then better and better. Not exactly normal yet, but getting through the days just fine. Laughing again, and no cravings to date. My will is so strong, it has made the thought of pills disgusting. Not sure how that happened, but I'll takeit. Going to after care this week to eensure I never slide back!

Yes, a detox is ridding your body of chemicals like opiates. Tapering is slow detox. The period of time following abrupt withdrawal is a detox period. In about 72 hours, most of the drug is gone from your body.

My addiction was not to opiates. I DID take pain med for 4 months, everyday at the highest dosage for pain after a pretty bad leg fracture.  One day I just stopped, never really thought about it, took Motrin that day, and just walked away without anything happening. So, I guess it's possible to not get addicted because I didn't, physically or mentally.

I suspect you may have some wd's from the Oxy, though. It's a lot stronger than what I took...

I don't know for sure that I am addicted because I have not gone without a dose in four months to really give the drugs a full chance to wear off and see what the consequences would be. But given my dosage, is there any chance that I would not be addicted, or not go through withdrawals during taper/detox? The joke would sure be on me, and I would have gone through a lot of worrying for no reason if I am not. Also, can someone clue me in about what detox actually is? I understand that detox comes after tapering, but it would seem that if someone tapered down to 10mg or whatever per day and give the body a chance to get used to that amount, could one not be "detoxed" at that point? Thanks to all my thoughtful friends, brothers and sisters who are helping me and everyone else in trying to beat this.

Try the Yellow Pages under physicians or google "addiction specialists".

Four months is not a long time BUT your dose is on the higher side. Do you think you're addicted?

Tapering is a good way to go, in my opinion. It's much less stressful to your body. Check with your doctor for a taper plan and talk with him about dropping down on the OxyContin first.

Best of luck!

This might seem like a stupid question, but how would I go about locating a pain management, addiction, detox physician? Thanks.

Jack,

You'll get great encouragement on this site but make sure you consult with your physician every step of the way as you taper and then detox.

A method that might work wonders for one person might not be right for another. One person might be able to taper to 90% and jump; another person might need to reduce much more before going cold turkey.

There are physicians who specialize in pain management, addiction, and detoxing. I've worked with one who has been crucial in my detox. You might  consult with such a specialist if there is one in your area.

Best of luck as you retake control of your life.

Hi! I was on heroin for about a year and before tht i was addicted to pain pills for almost 2 yearz im currently 63 days clean right now so it is possible if u really want to b clean. If ur looking to get clean and have only been using for 4-6 months then u habe come to the right place! Everyone here is absolutely wonderful and will help u thru every step. Ur w/d shouldnt be tht bad since u werent using tht long but it does depend on how much u were using what u were using. Everyone is different when it comes to the w/d process but if u put ur mind to it and really want it,  it will happen. Do u mjnd me asking what u were using and how much? Do u plan to taper or go ct?
