Just Need Some Support

Hi
Ive been taking codeine for the last 7-8 months up to 160mg a dose, and up to 4 to 5 times a day.
After a huge struggle I finally got off it but found myself with a script for Endone from a doctor at a hospital who wasnt aware of my past history, I really thought I couild control it as it wasnt a codeine based product and got the script filled, since then I have been back to a clinic to get more and have been taking it now for a month up to 6 -8 tabs a day 5mg each.
I think I have just replaced one addiction with another and am so angry at myself for believing I could control it.
Today is the first day I havnt had any, instead ive taken some ibuprofen when ive needed it.
But im laying in bed and cant sleep my legs are cold, cramped and restless and its driving me mad as well as a chesty cough and a craving im trying to ignore..
How long will this last? Im determined to kick my pain killer addiction but it isnt easy.

Welcome,

You have learned what many of us here have learned....that an opiate is an opiate is an opiate.  Once we cross that addiction line we have seemingly ruined our ability to EVER take another opiate in a responsible way.

The good news is that your new drug use has only been for a short term which will greatly lessen your amount of suffering through wd.

If you are determined to do this (which is good) you simply need to push through it.  I can almost promise you that your suffering will be much less severe than your first time around.

Hang in there and keep posting, we are all here to help.

Goodluck!!!!

Ok so im now on day 3 and for the first time last night my legs wernt too bad and I actually got some sleep.
Im starting to feel somewhat normal and I also went all day today without taking any nurofen, except when I got home my headache was so bad I took two to try and control it.
Its good to know that this process gradually eases and it makes me realise there is light at the end of the tunnel and im not going to feel like this forever.
At the moment I feel good possibly due to the fact I feel like I actually got a halfway decent sleep last night, but even still it just makes the cravings to take something that little bit easier to control as it makes me realise that if I go back to taking codeine or Endone I will just have to struggle with the withdrawals again.. One step forward two steps back.
I just want to say thanks to everyone on this site, reading your stories has made me realise im not the only one out there struggeling im grateful and thankful beyond words for stumbling across this site.
I know its not over but im feeling like there may actually be a light at the end of the tunnel

Hi again,

It's really nice to see you hanging in there still.  There IS light at the end of your tunnel and you are incredibly wise to keep taking the steps necessary to get you there.

The fact you are sleeping ok means tht the physical stuff should be ending very soon.

Great job!!!!

Like you buddy I relapsed the first time I had been clean and the wd lasted only 3 days not 35. Dont know how you are now hopefully better, just stay from all opiates. I tell myself this is a matter of life and death you just can't take them. I ct 300mg of oc and was in bad shape but it gets better and my life has never been better, the drugs and devil tell you it will never get better but it does and is so worth it, keep it up bro I'm pulling for you.     Chris

Hey Bob
Thankyou so much for your responses.
Your first response on the first night id gotten off the tabs really hit home when you said an opiate is an opiate is an opiate, and I keep it repeating in my head. I dont know something about that just made me click and I just wanted to say I appreciate the fact that you took the time to respond in a dark hour when I needed it.
I still havnt taken anything and im feeling good its nice not to be so secretive and spend all my time after work plotting and chemist hoping.
And the wd's have eased alot my legs are the main thing ive noticed because that was complete hell and made me sleeping next to impossible.. But im finally starting to get some more sleep of a night time which really helps me to function during the days.
Thanks again

You've done so well and we're all really proud of you on here!

You were brave enough to admit your problem to yourself, and then come on to the site to tell others.

Codeine isn't as bad as some opiates, so the withdrawals really shouldn't be as bad as some others, so hopefully you're over the worst, but it's still very courageous of you to detox.

Remember to search your house, and if there's any opiate containing tabs anywhere just chuck them. Some over the counter drugs contain opiates, so always read the label carefully before buying. If you have pain, there's plenty of non-opiate alternatives.

Likewise if your doctor tries to prescribe anything containing a narcotic, you need to refuse and explain why. Sadly, once an addict, always an addict.

So happy to see you doing so well.

Congratulations and keep up the good work.

With very best wishes

Hi Guys
Just thought id check in and let you know im still off all the tabs except ibuprofen occassionally when needed.
I have got a question though, Ive recently come down with the flu, this is not due to wd's as they are well and truly over.
I went to the chemist to get some cold and flu tabs and found most contained codeine, and I refuse to take anything with codeine, I did pick up a packet that contains paracetamol 500 mg, phenylephirne hydrocloride 5mg and chlorpheniramine maleate 2 mg.
I just want to know if these and the ingrediants are safe before I take them and run a risk of getting even a slight addicition to them.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
Chantel

Chantel, I would say they are fine.  Just take when needed and as directed.  And congrats on staying clean!  Way to go!

Thanks for the advie tramahater :)
I read on it the phenylephrine hydrochloride and remember people mentioning on here hydro's and was concerened that may have been the substance they were talking about, even though the cold and flu tabs I got were over the counter I still wanted to check as thats how I became addicted to codeine, and theres no way I want a repeat.
Its better to be safe than sorry
Thanks for the advice

Hey Bob

Thanks for the message.
Not feeling too crash hot at the moment have been having bad wisdom tooth pain I havnt sleept properly in 3 night nurofen isnt even working.
I went to the chemist today and told him I needed something that didnt have codeine it, and most pain killers do so he suggested panadol and nurofen which still isnt helping, Its times like these I wish id never gotten addicted to the **** because now when im in pain im too scared to take anything.
The chemist suggested going to the doc and getting trammadol.. We all know how that one will end.
Has anyone got any suggestions the pain is killing me
