Just curious! Severe lower back pain with any Hydrocodone withdrawal...

I had the most severe detox off Fentanyl in July of 08' and never touched it again but never craved it again b/c I wasn't mentally addicted, taking it for pain strictly! Anyway, less than 6 months later I have been taking Hydrocodone 10/500 off and on since then. The first year was rough b/c of I took it straight for at least 5 days I'd have bad w/D's but nothing compared to the 150mcg patches I was on and that HELL of w/d. Anyway, I had a different detox and w/d symptoms. The back pain was the worst and it happened everytime! Anyone got an explanation or answer for that symptom??? I know why we can't sleep, have RLS, severe anxiety, pain all over, etc. but that one puzzles me!! Plus since '08 I can not get my tolerance down since the Fentanyl detox!!! I have A lot of medical problems, Crohns, Ulcerative colitis, PCOS,vuladynia, menstraul migraines, complete teeth recrostuction. I was recently off all opiates for a year and still only take them... Only 10 mg Vicodin if absolutely needed! Tolerance won't go down. Have to at least take 40mg at time to get some relief! *****! Don't know what to do. I having 2 surgeries coming up this year n really worried. Plus have a mass on my Colon n waiting to find out I'd I have cancer. Please pray for me! Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!!! ;)

When I came off opiates, I had horrible lower back pain.  What I found that helped was taking Magnesium and Potassium supplements.  Both these vitamins help neuromuscular communication, so the brain will recognize the need to regulate pain receptors in that part of the body.  When you are taking pain meds, your body's natural pain control becomes obsolete.  It takes a long period of abstinence in order to really feel the benefits of full body recovery.  Taking Hydrocodone is just prolonging the problem and will not get your tolerance back until you give them up for good.  AND I don't want to encourage getting your tolerance back for the wrong reasons, i.e. so you can get high on lower doses again.  It is very normal to experience lower back pain just an FYI.  I hope this helps :o)

You have been on and off of narcotics for a long time so i can see why your tolerance is up.  Back pain is very common.  Are you trying to wean down before surgery?

Hey, girlie!  I don't have an explanation for the back pain except some people just report having it.  I have back ache from a fracture anyway, so I'm not sure if WDs make it worse for me or not?  The thing you already know is: taking any opiate after you've been addicted to one is a BAAAAAAAAAAD idea.  Really bad!  It takes a long time for tolerance to go down when it comes to opiates.  Benzos, for example, are not that way.  If you stop those for say 9 months, you'd need to start back with a small amount if needed.  I'm telling you all of this from my huge amount of unfortunate experience!

Sounds like you need pain relief.  I guess my question is.....are you trying to stop?  Are you trying to lower your tolerance so you can keep taking it later?  If that's the case, you'll end up right back where you are now!  That's a no brainer!

Have you talked to your doctor about this?  I think that would be where I'd start.  Be completely honest about what's going on and your concerns about the surgery and medications and fear of not getting adequate pain control.

Good luck to you!! I hope it all works out and you get relief soon!
