I am close to 60 days clean from oxycodone which was prescribed for severe back issues. Two weeks prior to this 60 day period I had a 4-day really bad pain episode. My RN wife dispensed the pills. The pain stopped on 4-days, so I told my wife in all honesty, I did not need the pills.
NOW TO WHAT I REALLY WANT TO SAY
The mental craving beast was reawakened. The craving thoughts came back. It was not so much a physical WD issue, as it was my brain getting reaquainted to an old friend. I really want to be clean, so I did OK. But I believe even when we use pain meds now legitimately for a few days short term. the mental beastie will haunt us. Just my opinion. If I needed surgery now I would block the pain with the meds if needed. But my addictive thoughts will be there too, so I had better be prepared
well everyone is diff but I wouldn't think they would be bad at all if you are planning on taking them just that one day....If you need them for legit pain, then there's nothing you can do about it, but if you have someone that can hold your pills for you and give them to you ONLY as needed that would help you alot...you don't want to wake up the beast of addiction again...just because we are addicts, doesn't mean we need to suffer in pain...there are ways to control it. Try not to stress over something that isn't here yet....the further you are into recovery, the less likely that you will want to take more than needed. And congrats on those 6 days!! way to go!
Hi there. If you have a good plan in place...talk to your dr, maybe have someone hold your pills as above mentioned...I think it's not unreasonable to try and manage your pain after major surgery. That being said...be careful!!
Taking an addictive substance can be a slippery slope, even if its for legitimate reasons, for anyone at any stage of recovery , especially so early on. It is important to be honest and set up roadblocks so it does not creep back up on you. Consider different options for pain management, if not from the start, then very soon after the surgery (ie have someone hold and set a limit for yourself before switching to another non addictive med). I know you mentioned only taking them for the first few days...just reiterating.
Regarding withdraws, it's hard to predict (and is dependent upon the factors happydays mentioned). Take into consideration that you may still be experiencing residual physical withdraws on day 18. I know I was still restless, anxious, and sneezing like a mad woman up until 45 or so days. Either way, I doubt your withdraws, if any, would be as intense. Just remember...it's the mental aspect that lingers. Keep your guard up and set yourself up for success. Stay sober, happy, and healthy my friend :)
I have been clean for 6 days now and I am planning on taking about 1-3 pills on my 18th day which I will be clean. For my surgery would I get withdrawals?
how long have you been off the pills now? i would guess that your WDs wouldn't be that bad, if any....depending on how much you were taking and what you were taking....sorry about the injury...just talk to your doctor about this and maybe he can help you get a plan into place...we are here for support if you need us. :)
I wouldn't think you'd get w/ds but every person is different. One thing for sure is that you wouldn't get them as badly. Good luck with your surgery and I'm so sorry about your injury. Keep posting and keep us updated!
I was taking got up to about 60mgs. For about 6 months. I was a pro athlete which this injury ended my career. And i would have like to move the surgery farther back but i need to work and i do a lot of lifting an shovling. was just wondering if I took 1-2 pills for the first couple of days following surgery. Then just try get theough it with over the counter pills. Would I get withdrawals all over again?
I would have to say 2-3 pills within the cirst few days after the surgery? Thank you all so much for your guys advice. I am almost 100 percent% I think hahaha!!!!! But thank u for all your support.
Hi and I'm so glad you're feeling better! I would be honest and talk to your doctor. If/when you're given the pain meds I would give them to someone you trust to hold and dispense them to you (i.e. spouse / parent / etc). It will be too early for you (heck, just about most of us here) to have the control to not abuse. Your mind will rationalize why it's okay to use and use and use some more because you have a script, pain, and a valid reason.
Regarding the w/ds I think it really just depends on many factors. How long you were using previously (and how much). What substance. How long will you be needing pills after the surgery? Since the surgery is not life threatening, and unless you're a pro baseball player :) I would contemplate pushing the surgery back further until you're well on your way to recovery. My husband has had a torn rotator for over a year and still works a blue collar / manual job and plays tournament softball every weekend. With some light PT / gym workouts you could live with this until you feel more confident with controlling your addiction.
I hope you're doing well today and keep posting and letting us know what you decide to do!
Hi there! I'm not sure how long you've been clean or what your habit was like but I'd say that it depends what you mean by 'a few' (smile.) Please, let us know. Thanks!
