Norco 3 yrs - Neck injury - Wean/Rehab

I have been reading this subject here for over a year since I knew I needed to stop taking Norco.  I also had physical therapy and 3 injections after a neck injury 3 yrs ago which I lost the use of my right arm.  I'm 58 and I had taken pain meds throughout my life without any need for long term until this injury and a major life change.

With in the same two weeks of my injury happening to my neck my son and his wife and 3 month baby got into a car accident and mother died and my son was injured badly and we had to take in my grandson who had birth issues.  The mother of my grandson didn't have any family to take grandson, her mother died 5 yrs earlier in a motorcycle accident and father left the state.  Well, because I had to deal with Social Services, therapies for my grandson and try to function all while working full time I decided to stay on the meds to get everything done without loosing my job and my grandson.  It was a nightmare and I hated to get back on pain meds however; I couldn't lift and hold my grandson along with having people in and out of my house doing therapies for my grandson and the social workers who would come to check on grandson.  We decided to adopt grandson because my son had worse health issues and because I worked for a School District I had a lot of resources to help my grandson.

I knew what was going to happen with taking the meds.  Well, because of having to take off work for my grandson for the past 3 yrs and I learned that I couldn't work full time anymore we decided I needed to retire early because I became very depressed and stressed out.

I just retired and I am ready to wean or get off meds....I don't want to go to the rehab that my insurance or Dr's HMO prefers because of knowing a person who works there and it is a 12 step program.  Plus, I really want to keep a need to know and within my family and Dr circle.  I found another rehab and they said I will need to pay the $1000 co pay and I can go to theirs.  Here is my stats:  I take 4-6 10/325 Norco daily for 3 yrs, just to keep from getting sick lately.  I still have pain issues however; the meds and the crazy life I have been living for the past 3 yrs has gotten me out of eating right and exercising like I use to do so I know that my pain issue is also because of not caring for my body.  I noticed that I have also gotten very depressed the last year.  From the meds, adopting and caring for a infant (now toddler grandson) and the crazy schedule I have been on.  I've gained 40 pounds and I have never been overweight all of my adult life until this all happened.  My Dr said it is from all the stress I have been on however; I also think it's the meds, too.  My older brother died of colon cancer several years ago and because these meds interfere with my bowel movements I am really getting scared so I am ready to tackle this.  I have a colon appointment in several weeks so I only have 2 weeks to stay at the rehab.  I had a colon treatment when I was on meds and the Dr said my colon was still dirty after drinking all of that stuff they give you.  This is because of my bowels on these meds.

My question is can I tell the rehab not to do heavy doses of sub, even if I feel a little sick I don't want to waste any time having them overly dose the sub like I have read here.  I don't want to replace the pain meds with something worse.  I may take depression meds however; even that I don't want to be on very long because my sister took depression meds for several years and she said it took her along time to get off and it didn't work anymore.  I can't afford to be sick because I care for grandson and I don't want to go into rehab again.

Any advise going into rehab and how to tell them no heavy doses of meds or anything else to only replace one addition for another.

The Rehab center told me that they will only wean me off Norco using the Sub within 7 days and no Sub when I leave.

I have been saving up money for over a year to use for my health issues not covered by insurance.  I have a friend who I use to work with who is Vegan and who gave me phone numbers of holistic Dr because I had told her that I was looking for a Dr to deal with my health issues.

Paying $1,000 is a lot of money however; at this point I just don't think I can wean or CT on my own in my house.  My husband is a good guy but he doesn't know how to help me and like I said I feel that I really need to get away from all of my responsibilities in the home because that will just stress me more.  I tried weaning b4 and couldn't do it and the lowest I can go is 4 per day if I don't exert myself with any housework, etc....

I would think that they would have to go by my dose to compare when they give Sub however; I read here about some rehab's that over med.  They did tell me that I wouldn't be taking sub after I leave the rehab.  I did call other rehabs one that I found that was a program like what I need which is pain med rehab however, they told me I had to go through my Dr and my insurance company preferred rehab.  This one she said since I will pay the out of pocket it will be ok.  I just hope I won't have to pay more....

Thanks for the support

Hi Judi! Welcome to An amazing, supportive forum. First, OMG!! I am soo sorry to hear about what going on in your life. Your neck pain, losing ur grand baby's moma, your son.. You've definitely been through a lot. My heart hurts for you. That's awesome that you adopted your grand baby. Okay, I've been using Norco 10-325, for 8 years. I broke my back I'm a car accident... The last couple of years, I've been abusing Norco. You take 4-6 a day? Girl, I took like, 8-10 a day, easily. I am 9 days clean and sober. I didn't go to rehab(don't have money, time or insurance) I used the " Thomas recipe" minus the Valium. The recipe is at the bottom of this page... I agree with ariley. I think that u shouldn't get on subs either. I heard they are way worse than norcos. If u so cold turkey; it's going to be hard but, not that bad... I did it. You can do it. Let us know how it goes. Stick with this forum.,we will be here for you. Xoxo

That sounds like a great plan then. You will get a break and be able to focus on you and your recovery. Just be sure that you find the right fit. This is your recovery, no one else's. Don't let anyone talk you into a treatment that you aren't comfortable with. I wish you the best of luck and hope that you have a swift recovery so you can get back to your family. It sounds like you have taken on a lot of responsibility with your grandson. Bless you for opening your heart and home  to him.

thanks for your reply...  two weeks ago my husband forgot to pick up my Norco at Pharm when due for refill and they were closed for the weekend.

I was very sick over the weekend and because I have two teen daughters (they are our miracle daughters we had late in life) and with the special needs of grandson my husband and I freaked out.

Lucky for me I had Xanax that I had for times I couldn't sleep so at least I had that to get through the nightmare nights.  I just can't be laid up in my home everyone still depends on me and they wouldn't leave me to my nightmare.  I had to tell my daughters what was wrong and that bummed me out because I am the so called strong one the leader that fixes everything for everyone.

The rehab is for me, I need to focus on me even if I can only stay for a short time.  After the nightmare of my husband not picking up meds 2 weeks ago he is more on board on taking off some hours of work to get the kids and grandson on buses for school in the a.m.  Because, my grandson is disabled he just got awarded Respite Care which means a care giver will come in and help my husband maybe giving a bath to grandson or what ever he needs for my grandson when I m gone.

Hi there and welcome! I would definitely do your research before going to rehab. You are on a relatively small dose of Norco and personally I feel that using Subs to get off of it is like shooting a fly with a shotgun. Subs are great for folks who absolutely can't quit any other way, but are not really appropriate for people who are on smaller doses and dependent. Is rehab a must? It should be fairly easy for you to taper off of the dose you are on, or even go cold turkey. Whatever you choose to do, we will be here to back you up. Please keep us updated and let us know what you decide. Good luck and take care!
