Oxycodone and depression

My 20 yr old son was addicted to Oxycodone or "blues" as they called it.  He took 5 or 6 of them per day and then began snorting it.  Long story short, he's clean now for 2 months without suboxone.  Now he has depression, sometimes severe.  He also can't stay asleep at night, he wakes every 2 hours or so and then is up for 2 hours etc.  When he gets pissed off he has outbursts of anger and goes way overboard.  He has been on 20 mgs of Paxil for 3 months now. Before that 100 mgs Zoloft with no improvement so we switched to Paxil. Any ideas?  Is there anything else he should be taking?  How long does the Oxycodone affect a person?   Lots of questions no answers. I'd appreciate any advice or recommendations.

Thanks so much for all the advice and support.  This truly has been the most trying time of my life.  Everyone else has given up on him but me.

I mentioned this forum to him, he didn't seem into it.  Hopefully he'll give it a look over.

I forgot to mention that maybe it would be helpful if your son got on this forum himself. I have found it very helpful. He doesn't have to post but if he at least reads some of these posts it may help.

Your son is lucky he has you in his corner.

Not to alarm anyone but I have heard that for teenagers and young adults it's not recommened that they take these drugs because of risk of suicide. I would consult your Dr. again and stress that you son's depression is severe and that he has temper outbursts. Good luck,

From one mom to another,  and  the oxy  withdrawal is new to me,  please know these words are written  with minimal experience with this horrid drug.      Pls  see my post,  as you, asking for help.

I took my daughter to the pychiatrist today,    we are only on day  2 1/2 of oxy withdrawal....but  did go thru  methamphetamines addiction   almost 3 yrs ago.   He  (the doc)  put her on 3 different scripts(not suboxtone, pls msg me if you want to know the specifics)  to detox.   And will do follow up in 2 weeks,  we see the councelor  she has been seeing for the past few months on Thursday........Her mood swings  are and have been  so extreme,  just as when she was on the drug.    I have so many questions  and am  trying to save my daughter life.     Please feel free to contact me at any time.

Bottom line recommendation  is medical help.......hoping he sees the need.    Sincerely, LLardo

I think your best bet is to talk to his doctor. My husband has had problems with depression and often times if you don't see an improvement in the symptoms after the alotted time for the drug to level out in your system it's not the right one for you.My husband had started off with zoloft then was switched to paxil then wellbutrin none of them worked for him.In the end his doctor put him on prozac and there was marked improvement in his mental state.Goodluck to you.Peace.

Depression is very normal. However, I have heard and gone through Paxil and that it can cause the opposite affect. It can make depression worse, and if you miss a dose you can see the difference right away. I did alot of research on paxil and worked in Doctors offices and have seen several cases of Paxil causes more harm than good. Don't get me wrong for some people Paxil is great and for others it is bad. The Dr. I worked for had a couple patients that developed an additive reaction to paxil. Another words you just can't stop paxil you need to taper off of it. As we did that with several we finally put them on Prozac and noticed a huge difference.

As far as the oxycodone goes the withdrawl part of it is over for him. However, once we get past that it's not over. For me I am trying to retrain my body to live life without narcotics. It sure is a long road to recovery.

I hope I could help a little. I usually only give advice if I have been through it or have been around it.

Good luck,

Jess

Depression is normal. I would check into seeing whether sub causes depression it might be making it a bit worse .For some people it takes a few tries to find an antidepressant that works for them. He may want to talk to the doctor about trying another one . I am sure they will find something that helps him.
