Percocet taper

Hi. I've been taking eight 5/325percocets for about 16 months for neck and back issues. Here's my question:  I would like to get off Percocet for good. I have 100 pills left this prescription. Would that be enough to taper from 8 a day to 0?  I don't want to involve my doctor at this point for fear of failure or commitment. I would like to do this before my next refill, on my own, as the refill would start this nightmare all over again. Any suggestions on a schedule for the amounts I have stated?  I took 7 yesterday and believe it or not I woke at 4am with worst RLS of the whole body. It was horrible. I can't imagine what taking 6 then 5, etc would do. Any advice anyone?

If you do a slow taper, for an example, dropping a pill a day every week then you won't have enough pills to get to zero. However, you could jump at 2 or 3.

Either way, you'll have wd's. They're not quite as severe when you taper but they won't be eliminated. The best thing for you is to check out the tapering site, do the math, and go from there.   You can do it and we'll support you!

That is a great site. The big guns. A little harsh but doable.
Thank you.

Thanks for answering. I really just wanted to know if the amount I had was enough to taper off. If not then I would do it next refill go around. I would just love to be free of this crutch.

I would discuss with your doctor if at all possible. They can work with you and make sure the taper works according to your situation. Just easier overall than trying to piece it together yourself and at least your doctor will know what is going on also.

Hi & Welcome to the community!

As it was mentioned, it is a violation of our guidelines to give out taper schedules. That being said, check out that link that pillguy gave you. It is interesting and it will be helpful for you.

Now, 100 pills is enough to do a taper. It is always recommended that you do it slow. Don't rush things because you will surely fail. It is also HIGHLY recommended that you have someone hold them for you and dispense them according to your schedule. Tapering is hard and more people then not do not succeed at it. I am one of those people. You will have cravings as you begin to drop and unless you know how to deal with them you will be in big trouble.

What concerns me is that you are already talking about not making it with the tapering and you are considering getting another refill if it doesn't' work. I always tell people to set yourself up for success and that would include canceling your refills. If they are there and you have access to them you will get the script refilled. That is a promise.

I wish you luck and hope that you will follow the suggestions. Let us know how you are doing.

We aren't allowed to post taper schedules here.  Probably because that would. be medical advice and that would need to come from a doctor.  You can use google to get more info about tapering.  Chech this out ...
