Pregnant & addicted to marihuana

Hello everyone,

I just signed up on this because i saw a lot of questions and good, honest answers from people who don't judge.

In short, this is my story:
I'm 27, have been smoking weed daily for at least 9 years. In worse periods I smoke 5 to 7 joints a day. Tried to quit a few times before, but couldn't really leverage myself into really doing it. (I'm still young! I still have all the time in the world! blah blah blah ) Now I really want to kick the stuff, because I'm getting married soon (been together for 8y, he never smoked weed) and thinking about having children.
The "plan" was to kick the stuff and start trying to get pregnant as soon as my count hit 0 (now my count is on 'over max', meaning the machine doesn't count that high, so we were thinking at least 6 months, maybe a year). It would be an extra motivation not to relapse!
I've been smoking graduately less over the last week and a half,  because it's an enourmous strain on my body. If I go "cold turkey", I get all the side effects people associate with pot: paranoia, depression, ... plus I can't eat, sleep or concentrate. But so far I'm doing really good and I plan to get completely rid of the stuff before easter. I told a few trustees and everyone is rooting for me! I'm feeling confident this time I'll be succeeding :)

Now for the bad part: I'm late. 4 days now. I'm going to get a test or maybe even see my doctor tomorrow, to make sure what is going on (It might just be the stress) but what IF I'm pregnant? What would you do?

I always told my guy I would abort a pregnancy if it would happen before I got clean (which is legal & morally accepted in my country), because I'm scared of what may go wrong with the baby because of the stuff in my system. But now, I really don't know: our "schedule" said to get pregnant after i detoxed, but preferably still this year. It feels wrong to terminate a pregnancy, knowing well that in 6 months we might be trying to get pregnant.

Should I go cold turkey and deal with the side effects for the few weeks/months to come? Should I go ahead as planned and graduately quit to reduce the stress of detoxing, or should I terminate "just to make sure?" ...

What would you do if you were in my shoes? And why?
(Yes, I know, I still have to make sure first, but I want to have a plan (as) ready (as possible) by the time I take the test)

theres no physical withdrawal symptoms like you would have with say...opiate addiction (I've been through both), its all mental.
BUT, that doesnt make it easy to break the" habit".  If you are pregnant its not about you anymore.
Do the right thing!!
Good Luck!

Trust me, Vicki & Cindie, there is NO alcohol in my life. Maybe I wasn't very clear in my other message: It's weed, and nothing else. I can count the drinks I have in a year on my 2 hands (of which one hand is my birthday LOL) except for the weed (and tobacco of course) I live a very healthy, normal life. (I could do with a bit more excercise tough ;p ) I took magic mushrooms ONCE about 3 years ago (they are legal here too), but I never did ANY other drugs, legal or not. :) I'm a fairly normal woman with a fairly average life. The only people that know about my problem, are the people I feel comfortable enough telling about it.
That's why we were going to wait untill my 'pee count' hit zero: I want to be a responsible host for my fetus and a good mom to my baby! Please don't think because I have an addiction, I might not know or not care enough to be a responsible person. Remember, I was already quitting before I suspected pregnancy ;-)
My concern is not getting clean, I WILL be clean . My concern is the enourmous amount of THC already in my body (it's so high the machine can't make an exact count anymore it just reads +300 (over max) so no matter what, my baby will still be exposed to what is already in my system.
But you are right, Vicki, I MIGHT have to recalculate my calender! thanks for the tip, I'll do that as soon as I'm done typing !

Hi, I'm cindie and welcome to the forum!

I think that you should talk to your doctor ASAP. Because if you are pregnant there are ways to get clean that are safe. Your doctor can help you figure out a plan.

If you are pregnant and quit cold turkey the withdrawals can possibly make you miscarry. I don't think that the baby would have any deformities or anything, it would basically have the same effect as someone who smokes cigarettes during pregnancy.

risks are for low birth weight, possible dependancy and since it's marajuana if you were to use up until the baby was born and the baby tested positive for marajuana or other drugs at that time and your doctor wasn't aware of the situation child protective services would most likely step in.

Talk to your doctor, talk to your fiance. and above all, try to get yourself clean.

if you aren't sure what test to get check out a clear blue digital brand, because if your pregnant it'll detect it even very early on and give you a definite pregnant or not pregnant.

Send me a message if you want to talk.  I'm a mom to 2 baby boys and I know how stressful pregnancy can be and when you add trying to get clean with that it's even worse. :)

Hi and Welcome~~
Here is what I would: First, keep in mind that February had only 28 days. So,you may have lost 3 days right there in your count.
Next,do an at home pregancy test.  If it's positive, see a doctor as soon as possible.  Be honest and explain all of your concerns. I think it's the only way and it's exactly what I would do. What you need is strong, professional advice.
Lastly, stop the weed. Start taking better care of yourself. You want your body in tip top shape to "host" a child for 9 months. No alcohol either.
Good luck to you~
Vicki
