Psychedelics for Opiate Withdrawl?

In my August Pupular Science magazine thiere is an article about using a psychedelic drug called Ibogaine to treat the syptoms of Opiate addiction. It is legal in Mexico and Europe but compaired to other halucinogenics it is quite dangerous to use so in the USA we havn't done any human tests. Has anyone here tryed the treatment or heard about it? It sounds like it is effective in stoping the withdrawls and cravings.

I have heard a lot about ibogaine treatment, and looked into it myself. Not just for the addiction treatment, but the supposed spiritual enlightenment aspect.

The medical director of my former methadone clinic was a big ibogaine researcher and went overseas to study the iboga root and the spiritual rites of passage of the Buiti (Sp) tribe which uses iboga in their rituals.

The turn offs for me were-  The expense, as treatment at the facilities that dispense it were very costly.  The nausea (I HATE to puke, almost phobic about it) and with the ibogaine you vomit quite a bit after the first dose.  The fear of the unknown, as it is said you relive events in your past, but by viewing them as a "Bystander" you gain a different perspective. And the fact that the cease of opiate withdrawals and cravings only seems to last for approximately 6 months or so.

Its an interesting read for sure though!

yes i have heard of this. at one point i was so desperate for something, anything! to help me through the withdrawal process. i am on suboxone now, and am very pleased with this treatment. it doesn't help my pain and it doesn't get me high, but it has allowed me to be free of the cravings and mind engulfing hampster wheel cycle of getting more pills. i have a new job and am working a program through the 12 steps and i couldn't be happier. i am just about ready to come off the sub. i am going to discuss this with my doctor in 5 days. it's kinda scary but i feel as though i can do anything now. i got ME back after so many years. living myself into a right way of thinking. sway
