Serious Pain and Agony

Good day to all. As some of you know, I started a new job recently. I work at the local Green House. I am now working on the actual "farm" part where all the Green Houses are and so I am pulling loads of flats, baskets, etc. from the houses and loading them onto carts and then onto semi's to be transfered to customers or to the store. Anyway, I am in the sun the entire day and yesterday it was in the 80's here and the sun was extremely hot at the farm. I got there at 9a.m. and did not leave until 7p.m. and I was wearing a spaghetti strap tank top and I got sooooooooooooooooooo sun burned and I think it is going to blister. My back and my shoulders are the absolute worse. I could not sleep. I can hardly move because of the pain and I WANT A PILL!!!!!! I can not even begin to describe the massive amount of pain I am in. It hurts just to put on a bra or a shirt and have it rub the burn. I am totally at a loss as of what to do. Last night I put aloe all over it from my aloe plant. I can't take this and I may have to take a pill. Sorry everyone.

Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do so you can get things done. I hope you can tolerate a light cotton shirt, please be careful and USE your sunscreen.

OWIE!  Damn...been there...and it DOES hurt.  What you need to watch for, since it sounds pretty significant...and you had a long exposure is nausea/vomiting, fever, blistering...that would indicate sun poisoning and buy you a trip to the doc.  Fun eh?

Did you TRY 800 mg of Motrin?  Give that a shot first.  Let the pill be the last resort...be honest with yourself...if you take something else...really determine whether it maybe helped the pain a bit.  Let the narc be your very last resort.  If you get there....it's no biggie...take it ONLY as prescribed.  That kind of sunburn IS very very painful.  Your skin feels like it is 10 sizes too small for your body!  :0(

You really want to avoid ANY sun exposure until this is SIGNIFICANTLY better.  Good luck...hope ya feel better soon!

automatically wanting to take a "pain pill" for a sunburn is addictive thinking.  be careful :)

I didn't "automatically" want to take one. I have been taking Motrin every six hours and did not sleep one bit last night and the thought did not come to my mind until 6a.m. when I just could no longer take the pain. I haven't taken one but this is not an average sun burn either.

Use the vinegar...if anyone knows about sunburn it's me the sun goddess, LOL. I will have gallons of it with me this summer. Just pour it over you in the shower. And shower with as hot of water as your skin can stand then finish with cool. I'm a sun expert:-)

I know you want a pill but thats not the right thing to do for sunburn confused. Be strong, well you must be strong to be doing all that lifting.

Chi_Chi....thanks!! I know it's not the answer and I fear that this pain will last for days and I don't want to take them for days so I am going to try the vinegar and just tough it out. Thanks a bunch! And I am one tough cookie....LOL

OOOOUUUUCCCHHHH!!!

Oh Girl I so feel your pain. I cant tell you how many times i have been there myself. I have always loved being in the sun for as long as i can remember. And growing up it took many painful summers till i finally learned to be responsible in the sun.  learned many ways to deal with the agony of a horrible sunburn. I remember one summer getting burned so badly at the beach i had to go to the drs. My face blistered and my eyes did too and they actually bled..let me tell ya i was a beautiful site...LOL. Funny thing is....well funny now it wasnt then  lol...is that i went to the beach to get a little color to look good in my dress for my boyfriends prom!!! Haha  yeah!!! that plan worked real welll!!!..LOL.  anyway when i went to the drs. (i know your thinking prom for her? this is ancient medical news...lol) but it does work and i still use this from time to time especially with my girls...milk baths. But what ive found to work even better then the milk baths is tea baths. It is like a miracle. Fill your tub with as the girls told you as hot as you can stand water and put a bunch of tea bags in and soak in the tub untill the water turns cool. You will be amazed at how this helps. Then use the aloe. advil is usually pretty good for the pain..i have taken 3 at a time when its real bad. dress in something light and loose that barely touches you and you dont have to wear a bra with.It can be excrutiating to wear one while that burned. Have never tried the vinegar thing..this is the first ive heard of it so that may be better but like i said the tea baths where like a god send to me when i did this to myself...at least yours was a acccident and not plain stupidity as i have done...lol. learned my lesson though..thank god. good luck hun i hope this helps you. Ill check on you in a bit. Love ya.

been there, done that.... OUCH!!!!!....can feel it all over again as you describe it!!!!!!   so sorry you're in so much pain!  just be careful though, ok?  when i got mine (i was in my late teens, it was bad, i had to go to ER), i didn't even know what the heck a narcotic was....wasn't even exposed to them until i was like 30....so, probably best i didn't know of them back then....anyway, all i could do was wear a TUBE top (do they even sell those things anymore???), couldn't  put on a bra for over a month....and even a light, light, light shirt over the tube top (cuz i had to go to work at times) was excruciatingly painful....but i just took my 800 mg motrin as often as i could, used a lot of compresses and aloe and all that stuff, got some script topical stuff from the doctor, and got through it....it took a long while to heal, and believe me, ever since then, i've NEVER even come close to getting burned that badly again....it only takes once that bad and you learn real fast....it's probably why i'm so anal about sunscreen with my kiddos....wouldn't wish that on ANYBODY!  you can take 4 advil at a time actually....and it's not going to entirely take away ALL the pain (nothing will, just time unfortunately), but it may at least take the edge off....take some tylenol pm to help sleep or something.....i went through bottles and bottles of aloe, too.....just hang in there....every day it'll get better.....you'll be in my prayers!

I don't think a pill would even do anything for it.......sunburn sucks!!!!  there are some types of pain that pills just wont work for..........and I believe mild to moderate burn is one of them.  You have to just ride it out.......I burn so bad I too blister.  I don't spend too much time in the sun for that reason and I hate using sunscreen.

Just don't put any oil based lotions on it for a few days.  Sorry, hun.  I feel for you.

Take care.

Nauty - It is so nice to see that you are not just on the other side (social) like you suggested a few days ago.  Your reply to confused was helpful, heartfelt, and compassionate.  We need you here too!  Glad you are!

Confused -  Your last comment was great "I know it's not the answer and I fear that this pain will last for days and I don't want to take them for days so I am going to try the vinegar and just tough it out. Thanks a bunch! And I am one tough cookie".

You are a tough cookie.

Yes, I will be on both sides.  You can joke around so much, but I need both sides.  It's like a sweet and sour issue.

Personally, I don't suggest vinegar......it stinks and your not going to like it and it does nothing......i looked it up.......myth.  Sorry to the experts.  The only thing you can do for a  sunburn, and doctor suggested no pain pill, because they are not going to be as helpful as just putting washcloths in a large pan of water and keep placing them on the burn as they draw out the heat.......that is the main goal in reducing sunburn pain.....draw out the heat......if you put oils, lotions and potions.......you will be keeping in........put nothing on it right now.......aloe vera in a day or two .....thats all you can do, unless you feel you have a 2nd to 3rd degree burn and sure you can take a pill but the cloths and water are the only thing that is going to work.

Luv, ya.....chica

cold cloths........cold cloths.......Ice cold wet cloths.......it does wonders.

Confused, Hope you feel better and don't need that pill. I too have a feeling that it won't do anything for sunburn. Hope some of the other things work. Corey

Hubby owns a landscaping business.  I know all about the terrible sunburns.  If you have a pharmacist you use regularly you can get "Silvidine" Silver Nitrate cream.  I went to Mexico and got a 3rd degree sunburn on the first day.  After the meds for dehydration, the silver cream was all that worked.  Good luck:)

You want a pill?  Does that mean you have some?

I don't think pills will make a sunburn less painful.  It'll only make you temporarily mentally okay........or will it?

Write me sugar!

Here's what I know....nuthin' ha! But what helps me and I read it somewhere...after all the remedies and showers and cold clothes...instead of appliying lotion use sunscreen as lotion instead for a couple of days..it helps...it does me anyhow....then back to regular lotion after showering...I'm all for the cold cloths...we used to use paper towel soaked with really strong tea. Regular tea real real strong. Something in the tea draws it out...but now, we just suffer and whine....

If you have a clean spray bottle (like one you buy to put water in for spraying hair or body when sunbathing) fill it up with ordinary every day vinegar. Yes, I said vinegar. You say "I am not spraying that stinky stuff on my body. This woman's nuts." Well, don't shoot it down until you've tried it. Don't be ignorant for years like I was. LOL Believe me. The smell almost totally vanishes from your skin after about an hour. I go to the store without feeling self-conscious about the smell because it's almost undetectable unless someone puts their nose on your skin and sniffs. (And if they do that then they have strange problems.) Spread a towel on the floor/carpet and move any unnecessary objects you don't want sprayed out of the way. (For arm spraying -I usually stand on the towel and lean over the sink). Spray the vinegar on your sunburned parts ONLY. Let it drip and dry. DO NOT RUB! If severely burned spray lightly again on sunburned area after a few minutes. You may pat vinegar after about 5 minutes if still dripping. Usually, the vinegar is dry by 5 minutes or less. After vinegar is dry, you can get dressed. I have never had dried vinegar on my skin damage any of my clothes. Wear comfortable clothes which are not tight or covering sunburned area(s) if possible. The sunburn needs to be exposed to air and not covered. I am telling you, on my skin, this vinegar is a miracle worker. It's a wonder product. Meaning, I wonder how it works so well.

Immediately after applying to my skin, I feel relief. My sunburn does not itch, does not sting, and does not hurt. You may still get joint point from a deeper burn but not on the outside. NO skin pain. Let me just say...my skin is unusually fair and highly sensitive to everything. When I sunburn it feels like poison ivy without the rash. Extremely itchy, lobster red, unstoppable stinging, and very painful. I am extremely light complected. Before this relief was out of the question. Believe me. You don't have to be in miserable sunburn pain anymore! I'll bet not many people have worse skin for burning than me. This works and you have got to try it. Make sure you are not allergic to vinegar or anything in it. I wasn't....amazing. I use distilled white vinegar. After using the vinegar I can go watch TV, tend to my kids, and even sleep well. Wow! For me, this is an absolute solution which I have been doing for about 3 years. If only I would have listened to my dad sooner. I thought I'd be miserable every summer for the rest of my life. I used to get in a bad mood instantly when I got sunburned knowing what I would have to go through, but now I know that I can help my sunburn and feel comfortable. I wear sunscreen on long days in the sun, but if it wears off or I missed a spot and I get burned, or if I go to an unexpected place and don't have my sunscreen with me and I get burned, at least I know relief is around the corner. Although I advise always wearing sunscreen to protect your skin from burning and skin cancer, sometimes you don't have it on hand or with you. I believe the vinegar actually helps heal and repair your skin.

The next step after the initial step above is to apply the vinegar again approximately 4 hours later, or if your skin starts burning again. Results will vary with individual people. After second or third application of vinegar, I suggest a product that goes hand in hand with the vinegar. This is an ever so important part of my remedy. After 3 or 4 coats of vinegar or the next day...whenever stinging stops without using the vinegar (usually the next day), apply Banana Boat Aloe After Sun Lotion. (See my Epinion article on this product called "Not Just For One Use...But 5!") If you are not severly sunburned, after 2 coats of vinegar the stinging should stop. After Sun is never greasy. Applying the After Sun Lotion gives your skin a calm, cooling, refreshing sensation while replenshing your skin with moisture, aloe vera, and vitamin E. This cream colored lotion can be used on all areas of the skin on your body, including the face. After Sun can be purchased at any store having a Health/Beauty section. This lotion can be used as a daily moisturizer also. Apply the After Sun every 4 hours. If done faithfully, according to my experiences, severely lobster-like sunburned skin will NOT peel and be dry. Therefore you keep your tan. For me, 95% of the time I did not peel. Wow! Again, for me, this a truly remarkable accomplishment. I would not spend all this time writing about this remedy if it did not work so well for me. I hope it works for you as well!

While doing the remedy listed above...if I'm extremely sunburned, I also drink 3 full glasses of water over the course of the day since our skin is deprived of so much water when sunburned. I believe this helps also in replenishing lost water to the skin. If it's hard for you to drink that much water at least drink 1 or 2 full glasses.

Nauty...You are right, or at least I think....LOL...a pill won't help a sunburn....I DID NOT take any!!

Momma.....Dang that is long!! LMAO....thanks a ton. I am out of dang vinegar but I am going to at least try it. No harm in trying except maybe the smell...hehehehe
