I already have insomnia, so that didn't help much.  I went for 2 months though.  I eventually ended up taking Xanex, and that worked.  Then I finally got a script for Klonopin, and that's helped tremendously.  But again, I already have insomnia.

Ambien didn't work, as well as all of the "good sleep habits" you'll find online.  They may work for you though.  Search for "good sleep habits" and that will give you something to feed off of.

I do know that Turkey has an chemical in it that makes you sleepy.  Hot baths before bed.  Melatonin.  Benadryl is the exact same thing as over the counter sleeping pills.  Exercise during the day helps.  5-HTP helps.  Warm milk, Chamomile tea.  Valerian root made me sweat like mad.

I ended up taking about everything in the medicine cabinet at the same time, along with all of the "good sleep habits," and still had no luck.  I don't suggest you try the same.  I very well could have died from it.  I even did this in conjunction with about 4 times as much Ambien that I was supposed to take and would still only get 2 hours of sleep.

You might want to talk to a doctor...

Some of you might differ in opinions on this one, but...

One thing that that is in your favor (kind of,) is that restless leg syndrome is part of withdrawal.  Insomnia is too.  And low and behold, they use Klonopin to treat these two combined.  Klonopin is a controlled substance though.  And you'll most likely have a very hard time getting it prescribed to you just by asking.  I had to undergo a sleep study.  But then again, I should have just fessed up to going through withdrawal, and I probably would have received the help I needed immediately instead of having to wait for months.  Plus, it ended up costing me a lot of money just to not have "junkie" on my medical record.

You are doing great - 21 days clean - good for you!

I think some of the amino acids are helpful - 5 htp or L tryptophan (sorry about spelling)

Try and be patient - I think we underestimate the mess we make of our system with addiction.
Just think - you are 21 days closer to a good nights sleep - it will come!

I used to lay there and get so mad and that sure the he!! didnt help anything!!!!!  I read until i couldnt read anymore.  I then started looking around on the internet at vacation hideaways to try and get my mind in a relaxing place. Warm milk & graham crackers or just warm milk....eeewww....but my Dad drank that everynight since I dont' know when....he swears by it and I guess there's a chemical that is in warm milk that is supposed to help with sleep. If I'd recommend anything, it would have to be herbal or organic, warm showers/bath would help though too.

I couldn't sleep for days while w/d and I didn't take anything despite some professionals wanting to give me something to help....ambien and soma but declined. I'm kind of leary about that for some reason, dont' know why, so I guess I have a question, who has used prescribed sleeping aids and what helps?

Hi Vicotram

I asked that same question about 6mo. ago, it was 3 or so in the am Great Greebo responded too my thread... Sleep is over rated you will get enough when you are dead LOL that put in perspective for me :)) Seriously though have you tried Valerian root with the melatonin that combo worked for me, coupled with a hot bath might buy you a few hours sleep.. I wish you well Victram.. lesa

I feel your pain. I'm only on day 4, but I thought about calling my friend to come punch me in the head until I passed out last night.

Have you tried a long, hot bath before you go to bed.  Also, take Magnesium and Calcium - that's very helpful.  I take those with melatonin and it keeps me asleep more often than not.  There are those occasional nights that I lay there awake.  But, that's the rarity.

Good luck!
