I was just throwing out a few things for your to consider.
And I must admit - there are people who can control whatever they set their minds to (within reason). My wife doesn't like drugs. She's had a surgery or two, taken the pain meds for a day, and then decided "well, I'm done with these. They make me feel loopy"...and she flushes 30 or 40 perfectly good vics or norco or whatever!  I stand by calmly watching as my addict brain is screaming and telling me to knock her over the head and take the pills. Her whole damn family is like that. She can be at a party, have a drink, and then decide she doesn't feel like drinking. She has a great time anyway. I think she's not of this world.
So, you sound like one of those. Just be careful. It really does sneak up on you. I too was a boozer. Quit 27 years ago; then 12 years in to my sobriety I found pills, and here I am 15 years later. I was an expert on addiction, but I had never experienced anything like pain meds.

Just because one stops drinking (which I did yrs ago) .... I don't think alcohol should not be removed from the face of the earth, same with smoking - it can be there but i choose not to recongnizle it -- believe me I'm no half stepper when I drank it was a party - but I'd rather fish - when I was a kid I could work drink fish smoke as I got older and to make the tides at all hours I weeded out the things that were least productive hence drinking & smoking .... If you can't walk by a drink or cig and not control yourself well than your not cured ....  Appreciate your support .... Maybe I'm a bit cranky ..... Ive managed multi million dollar construction projects and I set my self for a no excuse successful conclusion .... Maybe I'm using some of that now ...... Of course many fail ..... But one reason I was the boss was cause of conviction - the back injury is what led me to management - a bad became a good ? Lol - I am not trying to be obnoxious brother - thanks again

I won't go in to the difference between liquor stores and pills. But I will say that if you did drink, and had a problem with it, the liquor store would be calling your name. We all have our drug of choice (DOC).  It sounds like you have only become dependent on the meds; you're not describing addictive behavior. However, if you have any doubts, please don't think for a moment that "when you stop you stop". Most of us have stopped over and over again. I failed for 15 years. Anyway, my fingers are crossed for you. There is a huge difference between being dependent on pain meds and being addicted.
And I admire your courage and conviction. As an addict, if I had the legit medical issues that you do, well, there's no way that I'd even consider stopping the river of meds flowing my way. You are an inspiration.

We will see - though i was up to 6-7 piills a day - I don't think I ever ran out early - for sure it's easy and habitual even if it does suppress the pain - I found that I'd take a therapeutic level of the pills vs waiting for the onset of pain .... I noticed if I didn't take a pill I felt like hell - and that's where the issue lies - of course I' eat Motrin now .... But I set an appointment for the 5th for total review of options - life on opiates is not a natural existence ...... Yeah I' thoroughly understand the presence of pills and or a script is tempting - but if I got rid of both I could just get another script - I don't smoke or drink yet there are liquor and tobacco stores - when you stop you stop .....  The burden is on me .....

A couple of thoughts. Since you have very legit pain issues, I'd have another talk with your doc about what you're trying to do and why. Maybe there's a non-opioid med on the market that can help.
Why do you want to quit? Are you concerned about becoming/being an addict? Have you taken more than you should have? Have you run out before you should? Have you taken the meds for the high rather than pain relief? Is your day built around the pills - getting them and when to take, etc. Sounds like silly questions, but they are important. If you have easy access to meds, the odds are very high that you will relapse, especially after using for over 5 years, however, if you really want to stop using then you do need to get rid of the meds on hand and cancel any script currently on record. If you are addicted having the pills in the house, or having scripts available will undermine your efforts. Again, if you're addicted, making the pills your enemy will do nothing - the addiction will win; maybe not now but eventually. It is stronger than you, trust me.

At the start I was told a seizure was possible by a friend - though I've never had one I just wanted some support - its not an issue

Keep on hand - I have a back made of metal - I will dump the bottle once I'm sure the back pain is managible by self - I don't think I was ever into it for the buzz - your right - it being there daring me for now makes me stronger as it is my enemy - if I threw it out I could have another prescription easily due to my back - access is easy even if I throw em out

Hey Friend,
congrats on your awesome decision to regain your life.
As long as you don't normally have high blood pressure detoxing at home will be fine, and you will be best at home as this is not going to be a comfortable time, but once you are through it the gift you have given yourself is incredible. I am at day 67 today and life is terrific now. I do things now I haven't cared to do in years, like enjoy scents, liek the scent of rain and flowers and fireplaces and all kinds of nature scents, and food tastes so good again, my appetite is back, and I look great too. My skin now has color in it, andthose bags around my yes, purple ones I thought were from aging, I am 47, well haha they are GONE, LOL.

It will not be easy for a week physically. After that you will start ot feel better. The last symptoms to go are the mental ones, like some anxiety and some depression, but please understand they DO GO AWAY. I was scared that they wouldn't, but like everyone here told me they would, and they DID. Check out the Thomas recipe, and get some movies and hunker down for a while. Exercize when you can, and important, stay hydrated and nourished, you can use energy drinks, and when you can't eat you need to drink Ensure or Boost or herbalife, stuff liek that.

Please post as much as you can, it really helps. SOmtime syou won't feel like it, but when you do, come in and post.

GOod luck!! You can do this!!!
hugs,
Lily

I agree with everyone...unless you have had seizures in the past. ....going CT you will no doubt experience some forms of withdrawal but no seizures!

Now if you were on Benzos....ativan, xanax, kolonipin,  and stopped them CT that is what can cause seizures!  Very dangerous and should be monitored by your doctor!

And...you may be more comfortable if you talk with the doctor who prescribed vicodin!  He can give you things to help you thru the withdrawal process.

You can do this....I was on vicodin for over 10 years and stopped CT in January of this year...now I feel WONDERFUL AND VERY HAPPY!

Ugh - no energy for sure ..... And I'm flipping a house - could use some sleep though - I have no desire for the drug mentally but physically it would be welcome - I'll win.... The reason I started was due to a pretty screwed up back.... Now my Back hurts but it's better than taken those damn pills - reading like a madman - last of the Mohicans - sea wolf jack London - f Scott fits other side of paradise and hg wells war of worlds --- if u haven't read last of Mohicans it's real good ..... I'm a hard headed soul and have chosen vicadin as my enemy .... Family & Doc seem to think to take in moderation is fine ? I don't function like that ... Lol ... It's all or nothing for me .... Still the withdrawal is nasty, it effects my breathing rhythm I seem to hold my inhale - anyway its been a solid week so I got a good start ... Thank you for responding

i dont think u will need to worry about having seizures.  It will feel like a bad flu and no energy.  Week two will be more of the no energy or motivation, and some moments of strong cravings.  But if you can hold out and keep firm in your decision to reclaim control of your life from these pills, i think you will really start to see the light at the end of the tunnel by week 3.  You can do this!
