butalbital products often work really great for the right people and the right situation. however, chronic pain often is NOT a situation it works well with. taking those doses for a long period of time lowers the pain threshold. it also causes major rebound headaches. its VERY difficult to manage chronic pain with a drug thats notorious for causing even more pain, in addition to being highly addictive.

you are not unique in how much you're taking, but it is a VERY high dose. thats over 1GM of butalbital daily and because of its long half life (35 to 100 hours)....it accumulates in your system meaning what works one day may not work the next. no matter how long you take this drug or in what quantities, one thing is absolutely certain....the OVERDOSE threshold does not increase very much, however your tolerance to its effects increases extremely rapidly. in short, this means you need to take LOTS more to feel the same effects, be they theraputic or otherwise, and yet the overdose threshold is not increasing along with the increased tolerance. that with the very long half life leaves you in a very unpredictable state. you need to get with a doc ASAP about lowering your dose. you need to see a CHRONIC PAIN specialist to help deal with your medical need and you need to find better drugs to do it with than this one. not just because this is highly addicting but because it will NOT improve the quality of life for MOST chronic pain sufferers. often times, it diminishes beyond words. in very very rare cases, it IS the drug of last resort and the only thing that truely does work.....however this is extremely uncommon. you are concerned with your dose. you're not playing with benzo's or opiates or amphetamines here....often times their overdose threshold is very high. with barbiturates, there isn't that luxury. it becomes VERY easy to make a mistake at the doses you're taking. even just a glass of wine at this point could be the tipping point....or rather just continuing on as you are could result in an overdose. you need to take this problem very seriously...talk to a doc, get a taper and get off this drug.

Hey Sally--- What I would say to that is this:  It's too much and very shortly you'll be hitting
toxic levels if you aren't there already. You will fall into a stupor, you may stop breathing.

I hope you're not alone taking that much. I know about this drug,of course, that's how I can say what I just said.

You are not alone at all. You need to stop and you know this. I'm sure there are signs that things are "off" with you.  This med MUST be tapered, very slowly and over a long period of time.  You need a doctor to help you with that. There's a very good formula that works if you stick to it.

The headaches are part of a horrible cycle with Fioricet. Just get with your doctor, tell the truth and ask for help. It's the only way.

I understand about the chronic pain issue. There are meds that are much better than Fioricet. But,I'll bet Fioricet is the ONLY med that helps you feel better. We can talk and I'll"ll help you as much as I can, given the guidelines of the forum.
