Suboxone was supposed to be a three month ordeal

When I first went to my addiction psychologist he assured me that it would only take a few months of the Sub. Well here I am a year later still on them. Granted Ive had so many tragedies in my life that I would have went back to Vicodens in a minite. I had not intentions whatsoever of being on Subs this long. But I know that with all the losses I have had, my fatther, a grandchild, my nephew that committed suicide, and now my precious grandbaby,if I were not on the Subs, I would be out buying anything to make me feel better and handle this tradgedy better. So I guess its a good thing I still take them or I would be back to square one. I realize I traded one addiction for another but at least this one is under doc orders and I am not broke from buying stuff of the street.

I really thought being on the Subs was going to be a short thing. But every time I turned around there was a tradgedy in my family and I and my doc knew it was not the time to start to wean off.  I pray that my life will get better and I can get off these things. I am so tired of taking them.  I want out!

They call that one "harm reduction therapy" and its a legitimate approach. Nothing wrong with using sub or meth in an intelligent manner.  And if it keeps you from a relapse its a bargain. I believe that currently all the docs have to do is take an 8 hr one day seminar for prescribing sub. No wonder they are all over the place with both information and prescribing. Its not that simple.

It's crazy how all over the radar these doctors are when it comes to Suboxone.  I wish they would do as much research on it as much as a lot of us do.  It's so clear that Suboxone is a case by case specific medication.  I just got done replying to one post because some doctors say you must take Suboxone anywhere from a year to life and I was saying that it was too long, but now here's the other end of that spectrum where a doctor may have said too early of a time.  I mean a lot of us who are not doctors can tell now that you can't promise any amount of time for Suboxone.

I'm all for Suboxone...I take it and it has given me my life back, but doctors need so much more education...especially if they plan to prescribe it.  My doctor gave me a lot of good information on it, but I can tell he was mainly repeating what he probably learned at his Suboxone seminar or class, but he clearly learned that you can't predict how long someone may need it and he gave me good information when it came to tapering the Suboxone.

Thank you for this post as it helps many of us understand Suboxone more and I hope that things in your life turn for the better so that you can focus more on eventually coming off the Suboxone.  Good luck and take care.

You didn't trade one addiction for another. You are simply treating your addiction. You made mistakes in the past that led you to that point, but you've already paid for them. The suboxone lets you live each day. You have to change your outlook on it. Don't be concerned with getting off of it. Just enjoy being clean! Sorry for all the tragedies you've suffered, but suboxone helps ensure you have a success story to share. Congrats on your time. Keep it up.

hi. it amazes me that your therapist gave you a 3 month guarantee to begin with. they should know that everyone responds to treatment differently, and i would be very leery of a 'professional' giving anyone a generic timeline for recovery. chemical dependency has no quick fix nor does it have a 100% effective remedy. as you have found, success of this therapy is very dependent upon other factors such as life events. just take it as it comes to you and do the next right thing----and you will be ok.  take care, gm
