THIS IS NO JOKE: If you're on Subutex, Methadone or Suboxone, GET OFF NOW!!!!!!!!

how come no doctors really know what the long term side effects and the many actual DAMAGEs to the body subutex does?? I stayed on it for about 10 years and it was the most HORRIFIC detox that I almost died. I encourage EVERYONE to (if you're already on it)-GET OFF OF IT, or you're just gonna make the detox harder and harder with time...and if you're thinking about getting PUT on it, THINK AGAIN!!!!! I would LOVE to go around EDUCATING DOCTORS about how HORRIBLE this medication is. I am about to face the dentist in an hour and am MORTIFIED to do so because I have METH-MOUTH. (funny thing is, I NEVER DID METH!!). It's ALL FROM SUBUTEX and how it just sits in your bones and builds up over time and seems to EAT away your bone marrow and rapes your body of calcium. And the refuse of medication that just sits rotting your bones makes a later "appearance" in the show whenever it is you decide to detox. That's when it comes PURGING out of every single pore of your body as well as through your TEETH!! (just like the bones in your body). It has been FOUR MONTHS and my body STILL aches UNIMAGINABLY, I am in a constant state of Incredibly INTENSE anxiety, frustration and impatience. I don't wanna EVER get out of bed and face the world, even though I Must...Feels like groundhog day because it never changes. I wake up everyday in intense agony. And all over my body my skin has broken out in "PLAGUE-like" Acne-some places CYSTIC. (my body is detoxifying from the outside in) I don't WANNA leave my house because I feel like a monster. like I'm CURSED. This medication is THE DEVIL. It NEVER WANTS U OFF OF IT, it grabs ahold of your SOUL and never EVER lets go. (until you get FORCED to(the law/jail)or you just get so SICK of taking a godamm PILL every morning just to feel like the rest of the human race does when they wake up. It is hell on Earth, and you are absolutely INSANE if you stay on this med after reading this!!! THIS IS NO JOKE!!!! Email me if you want me to GO ON even!! ***@****

I came across this 9/2015, I doubt anyone will be able to answer anything but I will just post my experience for people who come across this after me:

DO YOURSELF A FAVOR, DO NOT GO ON THIS DRUG FOR LONG TERM MAINTENANCE.

I was on this for 1 year and 6 months originally before tapering myself off, which was a horrific and painful process (worse withdrawal then anything I've EVER experienced) but that's a different complaint. After the initial year, my back teeth starting crumbling and decaying one by one. Every single tooth past my front (top&bottom) four teeth have a GIANT crack/hole/ect.

I got off of this drug, relapsed within three months, after 18 months of not using street drugs. I had no idea the effects Suboxone had on your cravings/ect. I was NEVER encouraged by my doctor to seek therapy while on maintenance ect. I was told my teeth were rotting due to dry mouth.

So when I made the (awful) choice to get back on suboxone as a last resort two months ago, I decided to purchase everything I could for dry mouth, and see a therapist, ect. Basically to correct my mistakes from the first attempt at maintenance, now two months later, my teeth are in SEVERE pain to the point where I have to pull my car over because I'm crying so hard. This drug as RUINED my teeth at the age of 21, i was told I'll need a partial denture, if I stayed on this I know I'll lose all of my teeth.

The manufacturers of this drug and doctors who recommend long term use, are money hungry pigs that do not care about you. (shocking, I know) but still sarcasm aside you'd expect a little compassion and truth.

Get off of this drug, I can't stress it enough. I felt suboxone was my only chance at being "clean", that I was a special case who wouldn't stop using unless my receptors were blocked and getting high was impossible.

I'm now, 21, crying even typing this because of how much pain this has caused me, and now how much MORE money my addiction has caused me through dental procedures. I periodically check for a lawsuit against the company making and selling this, because it WILL happen.

For now I report "adverse effects" to the fda.org, and am searching how to taper off of this without it being the hell I experienced the first time. The withdrawal went on for a month straight, even after a taper.

I caress with everything u said. I was on suboxone for 2 yrs n my doctor wound up getting arrested n I could not find another doctor. I tapered down n was taking .5 mg sub every other day. When I finally stopped it was the worst detox I had ever experienced. I was sick for 6 weeks off just a half mg. My bottom teeth n now falling out one by one. So it does have a bad effect on your teeth. Its a shame because suboxone is a great drug when u r comming off pain pills or heroin. I found its the one drug u don't have to keep increasing for it to keep working. However I can't stress enough this is a drug u should only b on for maybe a month. Its not a maintenance drug at all. If used properly n for a short period of time it works wonders. If u r one it for an extended period of time don't kid yourself even if u tapered down u r still going to have a an extremely uncomfortable detoxification. Use it correctly n for a very short time

When I first came to this site, I felt very confused and almost gave up on MH all together. I had tried to taper methadone, tried CT many times, and was getting close to the end. I almost died during my last failed taper. I had decided to try subs and had an appointment when I stumbled onto this site. I was told I was getting a miracle drug, I was getting he11 in a bottle, and that I would be fine under a doctor's care. I was more scared and confused after posting my question. My doctor, MH friends, and local recovering addicts all had different opinions and facts to back them. This site is not to make people feel alone or stupid for the path they choose. During all the confusion, I had yet another respiratory arrest. I've never felt more scared. I look back and wonder what would have been helpful to me. If each person had only encouraged me with what they were for, rather than what they are against, I might have had an easier time choosing my path. Being told what to do and why is far easier to hear than what not to do and why. It takes the same knowledge, but is easier to digest for a suffering addict. Right or wrong, I used subs 20 days, I'm still clean. So, what's wrong with that? I just say this for those who are scared and feeling alone. If you don't like a drug, don't suggest it, tell us your solution and why. This is merely a request on behalf of those looking for answers. Venting is important for healing, but two people never have the same experience. We all have to do what we have to do, that's what it takes. I hope I'm not stepping on toes, I've seen lots of posts like this in the last year. I just want to say,"There is absolutely no wrong way to get clean, as long as you get and stay clean."

I agree. Way too many addicts trying to tell an addict whats bad.Ha! I am on Methadone & the drug has saved my life. I don't know where a lot of this negative speaking is coming from But, if it helps you stay clean go for it. There are many ways to recovery. So pick your way and good luck. Don't down MAT. It works for some. I am here to tell everyone Methadone works. 3yrs clean!!!
Catfish, the post you are responding to is 5 yrs old and the person you are replying to used subs short term to assist in getting OFF methadone.  Because methadone is an opioid, on this forum anyway, we do not consider a person "clean" who is using it.
Well screw your forum...respectfully.  I can tell you from personal experience suboxone is abused much more then methadone.  Methadone has never made me high.  Years ago I took my first sub , was clean at the time , and relapsed to heroin within 2 weeks.  Around where I live I see and hear people selling suboxone constantly. It is abused and poorly regulated.  I don't love the methadone clinic but it is what you make of it. Just because you don't feel like someone's clean that's on meth, doesn't mean they aren't. I don't nod, I don't crave drugs.  I don't stick needles in my arms or take pills.  That's clean.  I live a good life.  Would I like to get off of it? Sure! That's kind of why I'm here looking at suboxone.  Seeing about switching to suboxone and detoxing from that.  Either way I'm still clean and sober.
Gigisciz- You are 100% right. If you on doing MAT you are clean.
Okay, so if we don't consider a person "clean" who is using methadone LEGALLY. Lets all just consider everyone with any type of prescription is dirty then. Because, why discriminate?
Avatar universal
They know way more than they let on, methadone was created by the Nazis original name dolophine, so do u think anything created by them would be good for ya, prob not. I agree but they know more about tho a devil drug than any other out there, they know what they are doing, turning us to useless zombies so we can’t fight or stand up for ourselves, it’s a fubar system we need to change, it should be about compassion n healing not profits..

I don't know if it sticks in your bones and rots your teeth. I know, however, the half-life is monstrous and you're better off getting onto a short-term opiate like oxy or dilaudid. Four days of hell beats 24. Also, don't do what I did and two hours after your last opiate dose IV 4mg of that stuff. Oral has 22% bioavailabiliy, so I figure it was like ramming 16mg down my throat. Precipitated w/d was immediate. I literally ran to the toilet, dropped all my insides, and ran back to my bed scared ********. Somehow I managed to fall asleep and woke up in about four hours feeling somewhat normal.

So, where are you at now with things?  I guess I can't argue that 4 terrible days is better than 24.  Everyone is so different though.  What was the end result?  Give us more information as it helps to hear how things went and is going for others.

I've been on suboxne for 15 years and weened off very slowly with no problem. While I was on Suboxone my teeth and skin never changed. Maybe everyone is different. Maybe some ppl get untoward side effects and some don't just like any other medication.

I think you're right. Age, body mass index, physical shape, activity level, genetics, length and dosage amount, all come to play.
I believe that too.

I have been using suboxone for roughly 16 months I decided to switch after research from morphine to suboxone I'm prescribed it for pain however and it works great with the opiates I felt withdrawn and unmotivated.   It basicly gives my back and leg a numbing effect as I have permanent back and nerve damage from a collision.  That I do hope to come off it at some point but the withdrawal from all the opiates and I was taking 240 mg. Of it a day and if just curbed the pain, but I do hope one day to be free of all of them.

Please heed our warning. Ive had 7 major neck and lower back surgeries. Talk about scar tissue, damaged nerves, numbness and resurfaced sciatica. Im feeling you. I was on Suboxone for almost 3 years( thought it was 2) after leaving a nearly 4oo/mg/dau oxy habit. They didnt believe me at the clinic, in fact. I was challenged by a counselor regarding my dosage. She apologized in the next group after reading my records. I was on Fentanyl patches for quite a while too, trying to reduce oxy intake. All per doctors orders.
I had a real mofo of a time getting off of suboxone, it took 3 months to feel OK. Another accident, bad one at work, resulting in more oxy...I was convinced GOD had forsaken me. Then onto the Methadone Treatment Program. 6 years at 150mg/day. I titrated to 34mg and quit.
After about 2 weeks I ended up in the hospital. Spent 4 days. Longer than most of my surgeries....its been 2 solid months. I can describe in horrifying detail Satan and his Seventh Circle of HELL!! Permeates itself into tissue, fat deposits, and similar to Suboxone, into your bones. Im only able to walk to the kitchen from the bedroom just this week. You dont want this. Work out an exit plan NOW! PLEASE.

Actually, Subs have kept me productive and out of trouble with the law. I'm sorry your experience was so horrible with them, but is it really the only bad thing you've put into your body? I take ONLY (and I mean) ONLY my Subs and work my program. I do NOT take any other crap other than coffee and antacids. I've never had a problem and decades ago I got in all kinds of trouble because docs gave me off label meds...I was not harming anyone but the state wasted lots of money on me and stole half my life. I WELCOME SUBS and I think they can be good for those who will use them properly.

My own experience with subs has been life saving and I hope if I take it slowly day by day I can be rid of them.
God bless all and hang in there. Understanding is the key to getting help and receiving it.
Cheers.

BTW, I started at a "low" dose...as low as possible to keep me out of trouble. 6mg/day to start. I think some people could start even lower. This drug can do lots of good but it depends on how it is used. I quit METHADONE years ago before...I can do this and I thank God that I have the option.
Avatar universal
I was really thinking about calling my Doc and using this option to help me ease my withdrawal symptoms but thank you so much for this advice. I see I must face this cold turkey. And hopefully get through it and come out tougher than I was before and never think to pick up any pain killer in the future

Hi. There's a lot of drama here that's typical from addicts. The "devil" is not in a drug any more than it's in a thumbtack. I've seen people in NA quit subs successfully after slowly tapering and doing a serious job of it. If you are a long term pill addict (or worse) than Subs can be a way out of a serious habit that can get you trouble. If you just had a short addiction to pills then maybe you can do without. IF YOU DO GO TO USE SUBS find a good doctor that listens to you. They'll likely start you at 8mg/day. If it hits you too hard, ask for 6mg or 4mg or even 2 a day until you feel "normal" and sleep ok but not clouded. Then work a program to go down nice and slow. Take as prescribed! Just ONCE a day and then after you get stable on them come up with a taper plan.

It really depends on what you need. Lots of people curse subs. But I think either the subs were no good for them (we're all different) or they didn't really use them in the correct way.

Hey Cindy,
This is Mary. I have been on subs for 10 years too (after an intense 6 years on 500-600mgs of OC/day. It took me a year to come off of the subs. My husband was on it for the same amount of time and tried to quit with me for a year. We felt SICK the entire year. We both lost our minds, drank alcohol to replace and numb out even though we have never been drinkers. We both now have 5-6 ARRESTS from DUIs, PIs, etc because we were totally out of our minds sick for 12 months! It was JUST LIKE GROUNDHOG DAY! Funny you stated it that way because that’s the EXACT way it is. IT NEVER GETS BETTER. Day after Day after Day...you NEVER WANT TO GET OUT OF BED. We were never warned by our doctors that put us on subs. I cold turkey DT’d off of the 500-600 msg of OC that I was on everyday for 6 years straight. It was violent and horrible as expected, BUT it *ended* after 7-10 days! I was weak then, but recovered. Subs are the DEVIL. Holla at me, I’d like to talk to you. My email is: ***@****

It's too bad these legal options or so long lasting. If it was legal doctors could easily just taper you off OCs with some supervision and yes it'd be tough but not impossible to get past the physical pain at least. I personally have no problem with subs and they provided a great way out for me.

Answer to: “how come no doctors really know what the long term side effects and the many actual DAMAGEs to the body subutex does??”

Because most of the medical students I went to undergraduate school with (I’m a PhD Organic Chemist) don’t care about the side effects (meaning what other body SYSTEMS are affected) they don’t care about learning the basic chemistry of how they work and or don’t have the fundamental capability to relate that to how they affect other similar systems and chemistry of the body.  They memorize what is “going to be on the test” to get an A. Most barely passed organic chemistry, which means they can’t understand how the medicines (most are organic chemicals meaning are mostly  made of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, phosphorus and sulfur) work or react with organic chemicals in the body ( bio-organic or biochemicals). I used to say they’re just mechanics, but that lowers mechanics to the level of someone with only rudimentary knowledge of how to change a tire.  You must do your own homework as best you can. The only thing I do is mention something about liking organic chemistry and see what they say. If they loved it, you probably have a 50:50 chance they’re capable, if they hated it and you need them for a difficult issue, run and try to find a doctor that is capable. Thay last phrase is the rub. It takes so long to find a capable (meaning competent) doctor that you may suffer quite a bit.
*sigh*

Of all the times I “quit” using painkillers, I had the most success tapering, taking clonodine and Xanax. It’s never easy, but Suboxone is the devil. It made me instantly sick; migraines and vomiting.
EG70 —Did you have to get your benzos off the streets or did you find a prescriber? That’s how I would like to come off of subs this time around after 16+ years on OC & sub Rx. Thanks in advance for your time.

I tried Suboxone about 8 years ago. It caused intense instant migraine and vomiting. It was HORRIBLE. I’ll never try that stuff again. And yes, it was prescribed for withdrawal, I wasn’t using it recreationally.
Its the naloxone, tell your dr naloxone gives you headaches and they should switch you to subutex.
I use Kratom now, I’ll never use a medication like Suboxone or anything again.
Yes, Kratom is awesome. Wait though, the govt will schedule that too. They don't want anything out there that can help anyone with anything. I am surprised caffeine isn't scheduled. Alcohol is worse than a lot of the scheduled drugs.

Been on a steady dose of 16mg for the last 4 years and come off it twice previously before that by tapering. It helped me get off Smack & Methadone in 2004 by making things far more comfortable in detox. Not used smack since then however have had probs with Codeine on and off.

They say 'less is more' with this stuff and can't wait to start coming down off it because am getting anxious/worried about the effects it seems like it's had on my bones/insides/brain tbh? Find it like an 'Opiatey' steroid or something + get very angry at times. Almost feels like have taken 'Phet' because talk lots, feel like cleaning 24/7 etc etc!! Am also permanently red in the face though my BP is usually normal!

But anyway don't think I would have reached 40 without it and doesn't take a rocket scientist to know the damage I've done to myself abusing Class A/B/C drugs etc....! See all my old mates (ones that are left) still stuck on smack looking old with swollen filthy hands, grey hair, fed up etc and glad haven't been sticking a needle in my groin anymore every day like certain associates!! 365 times a year (at least) inserting a needle down below = I dread to think how would have been.... Let alone FELT.

(However know easy it is to relapse so will try and keep things in the day as NA say)

Cheers for all these posts.... Just to say when come off it before have had minimal withdrawals when tapering slowly however did suffer a nocturnal seizure in detox the last time from 12mg, but reckon they did it too quickly & do suffer with 'Opiate Induced Epilepsy' so hardly surprising really... When off the stuff before have had these weird shakes/shudders, sneezing finally returns and get nervous though feel like that on it anyway tbh..

Nice 1/Respected..

Yes, Valerian Root is a very good choice for use during particularly the dangerous acute phase of a benzo w/d, due to (as previously stated) the fact that it has GABAergic activity.  In fact I argue its very smart to use at such a time, albeit in a controlled manner.  Abrupt and overly rapid benzodiazepine detox is one of the most dangerous and stupid things to do.  The brain goes into a state of such shock over disequilibrium and it can cause, aside from the known risk of seizures, a grand slew of perhaps permanent or at least years long mental issues.  I know of this from my own experience, btw.  I was rapidly taken off of a 3mg.day Kpin Rx (in 2 days, no substitue long acting benzo used) and suffered a withdrawal that made a previous severe opiate w/d seem like a walk in the park.  I reccomend Valerian Root EXTRACT (~3-5x the recco dose) and Ashwaghana EXTRACT KSM 66 to 5% withanolides as a base and minumum stack.  Kava Kava is also quite useful to add if one can.  I don't endorse daily use of these (aside from the ash) but ~4 nights a week and trust me it just might save your sanity and also GREATLY IMPROVE your odds at a succesful full quit.  Cheers guys, good luck.  Much love to all you

Hi and welcome to the forum....first off I am not a fan of sub or methadone  it is over prescribed these days for people with low or moderate habits......if you compare the detox from these drugs you will find them much more difficult to stop....with that said I do believe there is a place for them...if your slamming a needle in your arm or eating pills like M AND M's it can truly be a life saver....it will put your addiction on hold and give you time to work on the problem's that have got you into this in the first place  I always recamend the N/A progam it is free the meetings are only a hour long and it will help you fix the train wreck your life has become in active addiction  both sub and methadone in conjunction with a good aftercare progam is defiantly a way to treat this disease that has a very high success rate  without it your odds are less then 10%  if you have questions please feel free to ask.......Gnarly

Yeah just ignore all those whiners who need suboxone, methadone or subutex to get off opiates. Once those meds came out they make heroin, oxy's etc different now and all you have to do is " pull yourself up by your bootstrap's and man up". Try it and see how it works out for ya. Keep in mind the ones who go crying to a doctor with that "it's going to kill me, I cannot stop on my own" are just weak and looking for another high.

Everyone is different.  I've used subs with success.  On for 2 years.  Tapered over 6 months, been clean for 7 months with little to no cravings.  Addiction is a complicated disease.  I usually recommend against using subs as I think it should be used as a last resort.  But it does have its place for some users.  It has clearly saved some lives.  I also take responsibility for my actions.  Nobody forced me to abuse opiates and nobody forced me to use subs.  One of the best things an addict can do for themselves is stop blaming everyone else for their problems.  There's work to do and you are the one who has to do it.
