If it were only that simple. I have had so much penicillin, metronidazol etc, to last me a lifetime, but sometimes it is hard to get through to the blood stream in the jaw, and you may need amputations of the roots, and there can be a lot of complications with that. I have had at least 11 surgeries (where they knock though/go in through the jaw bone on the side, not up through the tooth) and many complications with that, so it just is not as simple as that. Just wanted to clarify, why pain meds can be VERY necessary with tooth ache.

I know what you mean on that. When I had my braces tightened as a teeneager and they would tighten my bottom braces and tightening my retainer when I asked them to, nothing could get rid of the pain. I usually took a motrin800mg or 2 after an appt. w/ orthodontist and was ok, but my bottom teeth have always been trouble, novacaine never numbed the bottom teeth for fillings, and no amount of hydrocodone, darvocet, percocet, codeine you name it! could help. I'd take so much that I would pass out but still be in pain and once I remember not being able to eat for a couple days, couldn't even suck down a milkshake so my (now husband) gave me an ultram. It was like a miracle drug! The only thing that took away my tooth pain- one 50mg pill and I wasn't high, or drowsy, I felt absolutely nothing! It was awesome, it just took away the pain, not to where it was lingering a little, but it was totally gone. And that one pill allowed me to eat whatever I wanted, it lasted through the entire night. And I have a seriously high tolerance to opiates.
