10 days clean, questions

Hello, can anyone tell me how long it takes for one's GI tract to get back to normal after quitting opiates?  I'm only on day 10, but I still wake up with a stomach ache that makes me feel like I have to run to the bathroom, but nothing happens, yada yada, you get the picture.  Then I'm not "regular" all day.  It's one extreme or the other.  Sorry I know this is a "TMI" question, but I'm kinda desperate.  Thanks. :)

Never you worry about TMI!
Are you hydrating and keeping your electrolyte balance up? ariley above is right. It can take anywhere between 2 - 3 weeks and a couple of mos. depending on the length of use, the opiate, how you eat and whether you're also on other meds. (I found that benzos were the real culprit in my case!) Remember, there are all kinds of receptors in your gut. (Most of the Serotonin is made there.) So, give it a chance, my friend! If you're not 'regular' and are taking Imodium, try cutting back on it. Exercise will help as will fresh, unprocessed food. Stress can also be a factor. Good sleep also helps to heal every part of your body/mind.

You're doing Great! Have patience with yourself and the process. It will come! Treat yourself well and do the things you enjoy. You're worth it. Proud of you! Hang in there!

Congrats on your amazing 10 days my friend!  And it is so true, no worries about TMI here.  The stuff we go through during these first days just is not pretty!  The GI problems lasted on and off for me for a few weeks and I found yogurt to be helpful also.  And the body temperature thing - one of my worst symptoms from the beginning (they were full blown melt downs for the first couple of days!).  It took several weeks for the sweating and hot/cold feelings to really go away completely, and in fact I still get it a little when I am feeling anxious or stressed (of course M. Nature may have a little say in this as well :)  I can tell you for certain that if I keep up with regular exercise that this seems to keep the body temp/sweating issue under control.  Exercise, yogurt and LOTS of fluids . . you got this!

Me too. I was also having sweats up until Wednesday. It was so awful, seriously the worst symptom for me! I hate having to shake/hold someone else's hand when mine is so drenched and it's unavoidable at work and meetings. But I'm just so grateful today. So glad we are really doing this!

Day 10 in the house! Good job! For me, probiotic yogurt really helped keep me "regular" thru this whole ordeal. Are you still having other symptoms? Like sweats, rls etc?

Most def. on the Gatorade. Please, force yourself to eat. While you're out by a piece of ginger. Peel about an inch of it. Put it through a garlic press (squeezed into a mug of hot water.) Let it steep for about 5 mins. Then, drink. It's a potent anti-nausea remedy and it's good for you. (More effective and less sugary than ginger ale which they sometimes us post-op for nausea.)

Yes I am.  Very.  And my stomach growls for food, which is a strange feeling...because I have no appetite yet my body's wanting it obviously.  I don't like that feeling at all..as far as the electrolytes, should Ipick up some Gatorade?

Any decent health food store. You can look it up on line if you like it's called: 'Garden of Life' Primal Defense (HSO Probiotic Formula). I, too, kept running to the bathroom. All the more reason to keep your electrolyte balance up & to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate (2 to 3 liters) per day. Try to force yourself to eat binding foods. (cheese, oatmeal, rice, etc.) I know it's tough when you don't have an appetite. (I dropped about 18 lbs. but have recently started to put it back on.) Be patient, but be extra careful to care of yourself. Are you nauseous?

Thanks , giving me hope.  I've been running to bathroom all morning.  I just took Immodium.  I try and wait until I absolutely need that to take it, but I feel like I'm not getting nourishment because it seems like everything I eat goes right through me!  That's another issue, my appetite has been at the lowest point in years, it's practically non-existent.  I have protein powder but that sends me right to the crapper, lol.  So that's no good.  Annie, I actually bought a juicer, and I've been drinking some fresh raw organic juices.  I always loved the naked brand juices at the store.  Of course these don't taste as good, still learning.
I had forgotten about the yogurt,  Gotta pick some up.  I gotta get some food to stay in this belly. Geez before it was the opposite!  I was " nom nom nom" all the time.   Now it seems like I can get oatmeal down.  I'm not throwing up ever, it's just the other end.  And no appetite.   I need to heal this body.  :/

Naturally fermented foods like Sauerkraut, Kim Chee & yogurt can help. A good digestive enzyme is made by 'Garden Of Life' if you're interested (particularly if you eat microwaved or a highly processed diet.) As noted above, stress really affects the gut. The gut also affects the entire immune system. So, take care of yourself accordingly. That said, this is pretty 'normal' at 10 days. CONGRATULATIONS! (only 10 days, indeed! Awesome!)

You are like me then. I have a lot of tummy issues, and always have. I guess if you have a moody tummy like us it just takes a little while to balance out. Maybe try a probiotic, or just plain old yogurt. They can do wonders for straightening out GI problems!

Thanks ariley!  It's so bothersome, because it reminds me of the wd's, minus the other awful stuff.  My tummy has always been a touch moody, and I used opiates for 2 years straight, and it's only 10 days, so I guess patience is key.

I have heard that it can take up to 30 days to regulate the GI track. That doesn't mean it will, but it can. It's probably like any other symptom and depends on amount and length of usage. Hang in there... I hope your tummy feels better soon!
