I went through this back in January. I was so scared after surgery I'd only been clean a month and a half at that point. But I'll tell you what all these ppl here and my docs told me. Your body heals way slower when you're in constant pain. If yoy need these meds until your pain subsides, then you need to take them!  I was in the hospital for around 8 days. I didn't take the script home, and I should have. After I wasn't been given the meds anymore it took me a LONG time to heal. But I was like you, very scared. You need to just have someone dispense them and DONT let the pain get away from you. Goodluck!! All will be ok!

Welcome back glass guy.  I have been on every imaginable NSAID and tried alternative options, but the best option for me with chronic pain is Ibuprofen 800mg 3x/dy.  I have to take prevacid to prevent ulcers, but have spent a few years trying alternatives only to come back to this basic regimen.  Yoga Nidra for meditation helps, but that is it for me.

I hope you find what works,  In the mean time, have those pills doled out by a trustworthy source as prescribed.  Surgery is a complete justification, IMO, for pain meds, short-term, as prescribed.

A friend of mine swears by Aleve for her back pain, but it didn't do anything for me.

Wishing you the best!

Thanks guys!  Yeah I had lower back surgery didn't really want to take the pain pills but didn't want pain either. And yes I will only take them when needed. I just wanted something else to work for pain.

If you're hurting and you need pain relief, I would suggest giving up the pills to a care taker. You should take the pain meds before the pain becomes unmanageable. Take them as prescribed and after pain goes down then so does the frequency. You'll have to be responsible and on the lookout for addiction rearing it's ugly head. Just went through serious surgery and it can be done. Being noble sounds good but pain hurts. Take care and just remember the goal..Best Wishes...ike

What surgery did you have? If you only have to take them for a short time and it is something that will be better, you will be fine. As long as you take as few as you can and for as short a duration as you can. My sister had been off pain meds for over 2 years when she had to have a total knee replacement. She was more scared of the pain meds than she was of the surgery. She really needed to control the pain in the beginning in order to be able to do the therapy to recover properly. She actually had to take them for almost 6 weeks. She went through 2 or 3 days of feeling yucky when she stopped but was fine after that. You won't heal properly if in severe pain but just limit intake to when pain is really bad. Hope this helps.
