I am stilltryings wife and just thought id get my bit in too to see if it helps. I agree i think c/t is the only way. We tried methadone a few yrs ago and ended up taking both! We are addicts we cannot use pills etc like normal people we abuse them we cannot help it, thats what addiction is. It is an illness we cannot help ourselves. You will only be trading one addiction for another. It sounds great saying ill do this and cut down to that etc but in reality when you are in pain or there is a crisis you end up taking just "one" extra and thats it all your good work is gone. The amount you are taking is not that much and im  very surprised at your doctor going along with this. You are going to suffer w/ds anyway so you are only putting off the inevitable. You only really want to go through the w/ds twice so you should really try and c/t off the heroin. I know its really hard but it is worth it in the end, i promise you. Its your choice, we can only give you advice but in my opinion that is the only way. I also think that when you suffer from these w/ds it puts you off going back to it. Keep posting and let us know how you are getting on. You will get great support here.As i said my husband and myself had 13yr heroin habit and we came of it due to the support we got on this site. I wish you luck. If you are ready to do it then you will do it

I fully agree with you regarding tapering.  I simply could not do it.  It's too easy to say "Hey, I did great today" and then reward yourself with an extra dose or so.  Cold turkey is hard but it works.  Best of luck to you.

I give you and your wife much credit for going off the drugs; I know it is very difficult.  My drug of choice was Lortab and I went cold turkey, as my doctor told me tapering very seldom works and I agree with that.  Tapering may work for some, but I knew it wouldn't with me.  The withdrawal was rough, I admit, but eventually even your mental addiction will be gone, I promise you.  I just recently was put on Norco, but stopped myself in time.  I'm two days off it and feel all right and have decided to simply put up with the pain of my condition.  I COULD have fallen into the trap of addiction again, but I remember all too well the horrors of withdrawal, and that's what stopped me.  I wish you and your wife the best, and if you keep the attitude you have, YOU WILL WIN and you'll BE FREE.

Why trade one drug for another me & my wife were heroin addicts for 13 years .We used 3.5grams everyday some times more if we had the money every penny we had bought herion we have been clean for 33 days we are still early in our recovery .We did not substitute one drug for another thats not to say you can not do that you do it the best way for you .Me & my wife went c/t very hard but the rewards are worth every bit of effort & pain.sleepless nights.chills deppression the physical only lasted 14 days but there is a mental side that we are still not over but we are getting better Everyday is better than the last one but with the right support courage strentgh & willpower it is possible to beat this demon you deserve a better life than a life that evolves around heroin Svein you can do it but only if you really want to we wanted it so bad we were losing our familys & it was killing us make the right decission & kick this bad habit to the kerb good luck & may god be with you HEROIN WILL KILL YOU SO STOP NOW but its your decission on how you kick this habit stilltrying 1965 read some of my journals

It's not legal for a doctor to prescribe a narcotic to an addict unless he has a special liscense or works for a clinic and for sure  a doc would perscribe oxy to kick heroin in the USA. It could work but a week of methadone or sub and a quick taper inpatient would be better. Dis you say 8 mg. heroin per day? That's about average daily dose or on the lower side. 2 bags of street dope, aprox. all the best

My 2 cents re: taper is that it's very very tough.  I tried it numerous times, and failed every single time.  Tapering was always very hard for me because it only takes a couple days to screw up everything.  I would be tapering along, good for weeks, then all of a sudden a trigger would enter my life and I was back to square 1.  The most frustrating part would be knowing I went thru the tapering hell all for nothing, because I'm back at square 1.  Again, I can't control myself when I have oxy's in front of me, so the tapering process was nerve-wracking!!  Oxy's were ALWAYS on my mind - I was constantly waiting for my next dose - etc.

My doctor had also told me that tapering was very hard and he had limited success with it because you have to have very strong will power, and to be honest, most of us addicts lack the will power to taper.

Please please please don't think I'm discouraging you.  I'm just giving you MY personal experience so take it with a grain of salt.

Hi
I was taking oxy for a few years i did a taper plan and i have been clean for a few months.
after you make this switch from h to the oxy you will have to go to a pill with a shorter half life, pers or vics and taper down with them, the oxy stayes in your system to long and makes it harder to taper, kepp posting and let us know how you are doing...

The short answer, you can switch to oxy in order to taper off your dope addiction, yes.  You say in cooperation with a doctor.  Do you actually have a doctor who is willing to prescribe you oxy to come off your H addiction?  Wow.  I must get this man's contact info. :P  If you do, you actually have a very understanding doctor, there are not many of those.

My personal experience with tapers... they rarely work, I would usually tend to overindulge and blow it, but thats not to say you cant make it work.  Good luck, hang in there and keep us posted.
