I was pregnant and on pills too. I told my dr because I didn't want to hurt my baby. He sent me to detox so they could watch me and make sure me and the baby were ok. I am so glad he did because I couldn't have done it on my own. if you can taper that will be so much for the baby. You should talk to your dr. and see what he recommends. Congrats on your baby. Good luck!!
I use to work in OB and all the above is true. Some of our patients were prescribed percocets, Vicodin etc during pregnancy. You can very slowly taper down but if you have withdrawal symptoms at all stop. Call a OB and make a appt please be completely truthful with the OB. They can't help you if they don't know everything. They will advise you on the proper steps. Make sure you follow them (not at all saying you won't so please don't take this the wrong way) because they can at any time without your permission test your urine or blood. Also they can test the babies meconium(first bowel movement) it will show all medications/drugs done durning pregnancy. Then cps gets involved if its positive and it's a messy situation. Good Luck to you. I hope you have a wonderful pregnancy and healthy baby :)
I had my son while I was on the methadone program (no, I absolutely do NOT recommend that you go to a methadone clinic... Even if that's what your doc says I'd argue for another way).
I was also starting to go down in my dose when I got pregnant and I was forced to raise my dose ALL throughout my pregnancy, to be sure the baby never went through any w/d. They actually raised my dose very high, to the point where I only took half of what was recommended. I knew my own body and what made me comfortable, etc. I was VERY lucky to have a child that showed NO symptoms as to the methadone and was able to take him home after 24 hours like anyone else. From what my doctors told me, opiates will not affect your baby, but like everyone else has said, withdrawals will! There may be a chance that your baby will have to be detoxed when he or she is born (not sure about with pills but I know with methadone that chance was there), but the doctors know how to do that safely. You HAVE to talk to your doctor about this and let them decide whats best to keep your baby safe, and healthy, along with mama :)
I was very lucky and the only thing that the opiates "may" have affected, is that my milk didn't come in the way it did with my 1st child and I don't even know if that had anything to do with the methadone. It was just the ONLY difference between my 2 pregnancies; one being on opiates, and one being not on anything.
Don't think you're alone in this... There are many, many women out there in your same shoes!
Congrats and good luck!!
Absolutely agree with the above! Do NOT attempt to take this into your own hands. Get into see your OB and let them guide you. I cannot stress how important it is, if there's ANY time in your life you shouldn't play doctor (which we're all guilty of), it's when you're pregnant. There are just so many things to consider.
Congrats...wis you a happy and healthy pregnancy!
i have to agree with weaver on this one, i got 4 little kids and know how small things can affect pregnancy, your going to have to see a dr. anyway, they would know best, i also meant to say you definitely dont want to quit in the first trimester anyway, but leave this one for the experts, i wouldnt want my bad advice to jeopardize a little life!!
You need to talk to a doctor about this. It is usually better to stay on a low dose than to withdraw when pregnant. In the first trimester your baby is growing very fast and development can be jeopardized by detox. Seriously, stay at the dose that feels comfortable and get to a doctor. Opiates do not hurt unborn children, detox does. Find out how far along you are and do this safely. I'm not the doctor going type either, I'm all herbal, so know that I am not being paranoid, but sincere. Hopefully a doctors appointment and a concrete plan will reduce your anxiety, that's bad for the unborn as well. Keep us posted.
as long as you SLOWLY taper your baby will be fine, as fast taper and bad withdrawals could cause a miscarriage early in pregnancy, just take it slow as you can, how much and what do you take a day? it should be easier now knowing that you got a little live inside you, GOOD LUCK!!!
