Does anyone have advice for stopping tramadol?

I have been taking tramadol regularly for the past two years and my doctor decided to take me off of it. This is fine with me because I have realized that I am very addicted to it and the sooner I stop the easier. I have been trying to wean myself off of it for the last few weeks (I have some left) but monday at about noon I took a half of one only when I have been used to taking a half three times a day for the last week, and before that I had been taking one to one and a half for the last several months but no more. I felt bad physically yesterday but not as bad as I've felt before when stopping it abrubtly, well come three a.m. this morning I am feeling horrible and restless, exhausted but completely unable to sleep as well as feeling achey over my entire body. I took another half because these withdrawal symtoms were UNBEARABLE. This just serves to make me feel even more pathetic...I feel like I'm never going to be done with them. I still want to quit of course but I am absolutely terrified of the way my body feels when it does not have the tramadol in my system anymore.

Has anyone else gone through something similar like this before? Is it much easier if I wean myself down to like a half of a half of a pill or even less? I never thought I could feel so violently ill from stopping something like tramadol but I don't think I've ever felt more miserable in my life. Any advice would be highly appreciated.

You can wean yourself down very slow over few weeks or do a quick taper of 2-3 weeks .Its a personal choice but do not forget what your end result should be-stopping
tramadol althogether.IT IS going to require patience

I counted the days when i got off lexapro-for some reason i had a very hard time with withdrawals.I had to do one day on, next off schedule for a week after i knew what was happening to me.Please don't say lexapro vs tramadol -tramadol has the same component in it AD that weakly inhibits nonapenephrine and seratonin reuptake and by you guys taking it a lot you are dealing now with a witdrawals of strong AD and opiod.
Its a double monsster you created.

Dr should never write more than 300 ER. ER is different than imidiate release in a way-i willl put it simply- not the whole medication gets released right away and is ready for absorbtion but instead the coating of tablet swells  and its realease throughout the 12 hour period. But most that abused tramadol get it on the internet and its the 50mg dose IM and generic.

Just make up your mind after the taper down-the road is rough put your sit belts on and never look back

i am over 300 days free from tramadol. it's been a battle but i think i've won. avisg can help you with a taper plan. she may have something in her journals. there's a purple flower by her name, click onto it. excersise helps a lot too.

karma,
i have just started trying get off.  i realize it will be much harder than i thought.  i have been on about 200 to 300 mg/day.    yesterday i only took 100 and i woke up at 3 am in a terrible state psychologically.  i thought i was just depressed until i remembered withdrawals.  i started feeling sick,  nauseated, and got on these threads, researching.  please let me know what you find out about getting off.  i have read a lot of posts now but very little in hard facts.  how long does it take?  how much should you taper down? etc.   i do realize i cannot quite cold turkey.
