Hey, does anyone know why methadone causes tons of weight gain, but other narcotics don't??...I've searched & searched & can't seem to find an answer...thanks in advance for all replies!...

when i was on a high dose of methadone i would wake up once or twice every night and eat a pop tart or a candy bar anything i could snack on, seems like the higher my dose was the hungrier i got at night, before methadone i rarely woke up to eat

WOW we are are so different but the same??? I was like pat with any of my drug use. I would get BUZZ and not eat there for I did GAIN weight. but during this I changed my diet back to the way I have been posting lately and lost 40lbs while I was using in the last 2 yrs of my long addiction. I studied the info and found out also that when you do not eat the body stores the fat as a survial tec... and if you eat lean protiens all meals with low sugar and complex carbs the body will break it down better. It kicks in the metabo and does not spike the insulin......good stuff

I actually had the opposite effect...I lost ALOT of weight...too much weight. Now that I'm 46 days off methadone, I have gained about 4-5lbs so it's a start. I think everyone is different? I had no desire to eat while on it...I didn't care if I ate at all. I did good to eat one time a day...Now I can't get enough to eat!! Lol. So yeah...I think it all depends on the person.

Well you got me interested lol, so I searched Methadone and weight gain on this forum and there are tons of people with the same complaints.
Someone said it slows your metabolism and makes you retain water.
Do a search and read some of the comments.

Hi Pat, no not taking methadone now, but was in the past..I wasn't hungry when taking it, just put on lots of weight, which I hear is typical with methadone..I'm taking percs now & am not getting the weight gain like with the methadone, so I was just wondering why the methadone puts on weight but other narcotics don't???........

I have never taken methadone but I do know that when I was taking percocets I could care less if I ate or not.  Food would ruin the buzz.
Are you hungry on meth?  I know some meds really increase your appetite.  I found when I was taking Lyrica that I could never get enough to eat.  Is meth like that?
