withdrawal symptoms

My boyfriend is on day 6 of taking no pain killers.  He has been on it for years after a shoulder surgery.  He has all the symptoms of withdrawal that I have read about.  He hasn't told the doctor that he is addicted.  Out of all the withdrawal symptoms the sleepless nights is what he can't handle.  So he asked for sleeping pills.  I first thought it was good idea because all of this is foreign to me but now I think it's a bad idea.  He is on day 2 of taking sleeping pills for the sleepless nights.

You are right....HUGE STEP...I just hate to see you go through day 1-6 again I KNOW first hand how brutal those days are.  You are definitely making a good choice.  I can tell you man, I felt like I couldn't do chit for about 10 days.  I was used to going to the gym 6 days a week when i was taking them and now I'm back at it and way stronger than i was before.  I was shocked at how much the pills slowed me down.  It took me about 15 days before I could go and lift and about 5-6 days before I could start walking a decent amount....I'm not trying to be "holy-er" than now, I'm just keeping it real.  I think you know at some point you gotta fight through it which is huge.  I think someone on here says it best (can't remember who), but you just have to be OK with not being OK for a little bit.  I'm on my 29th day and I'm back to daily workouts and feel 10 times better mentally and physically than I did on 4+ years of taking meds....Anyways, hope this helps a little and send me a message any time.

(HER BF) WELL I LASTED SIX DAYS WITHOUT TAKING ANY MEDS. I USED THE SLEEPING PILSS I WAS GIVEN FOR TWO DAYS, THEY PUT ME TO SLEEP QUICKLY BUT I STILL WOKE UP IN TH MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT WITH SYMPTOMS. I DO FEEL BAD THAT AFTER SIX DAYS I STARTED USING VICS/ PERCS AGAIN BUT I DIDNT LIKE THE FACT THAT I WASNT ABLE TO DO ANYTHING DURING THAT TIME. DURING THOSE SIX DAYS I GAINED WEIGHT AND I COULDNT RUN OR WORKOUT. I COULDNT EVEN WALK. ON THE SIXTH DAY I JUMPED ON A TREADMILL AND RAN FOR A MINUTE AND A HALF AND THATS WHEN I DECIDED TO TAKE JUST TWO. AFTER THAT I RAN FOR FIVE MILES AND WORKED OUT. MY GF SAYS THAT I AM ADDICTED TO WORKING OUT BECAUSE I DO IT AT LEAST TWICE A DAY. SO TO GO FROM THAT TO DOING NOTHING AT ALL WAS A BIG BLOW TO ME.  I KNOW THAT EVERYONE IS PROBALY GOING TO SAY IT THAT ITS BECAUSE MY BODY NEEDS IT AND NOW THAT I PUT WHAT I NEED IN MY SYSTEM I FEEL BETTER. I DO KNOW THIS AND I DO KNOW I HAVE A PROBLEM AND IM NOT TRYING TO MAKE ANY EXCUSES AND I KNOW THAT BY SAYING THAT IM ONLY TAKING TWO IS AN EXCUSE IN ITS SELF.. BUT THATS WHERE IM AT RIGHT NOW. IM NOT AT THE POINT WHERE I WAS TAKING CLOSE TO TWENTY A DAY ANYMORE AND IM NOT AT THE POINT THAT IM HIDING IT FROM MY WOMAN( LIKE I WAS BEFORE) IT WAS A BIG STEP FOR ME TO COME OUT AND TELL HER AND I AM PROUD THAT I DID THT. Don't take this the wrong way but that doesn't sound good.  2 per day after 6 days clean for someone taking 15-18 per day won't last long.  Before you know it he will be taking more and eventually will need to cycle through days 1-6 all over again.  He should have just manned up and fought through it as the worst of it was over.  Sorry.

Well day six is as far as he got.  He didn't like the feeling the sleeping pills gave him the day after so he stopped taking them and went from 15-18 vicodin/oxy to only two.  He is going to continue on two for now.  

I just let him know I was posting so he is going to sign up soon.

Thank you everyone for the feedback.  I will keep a hold of them and only use them for a week or so.  Just didn't know if him taking sleeping pills was trading one addiction for another.

Yes, 6 days is major. He is doing great! Do you think he would be willing to post here? There are a lot of caring people who have gone through this who would be glad to help.

As for the sleeping pills, I'm with the others. As long as he is talking as prescribed and for a short time they should help. It is so draining both physically and mentally when you don't get any sleep. Perhaps you can hold them for him as others have suggested.

It's tricky for one to not trade addiction, if he only uses the sleeping pills for a week then it would be ok. You could also try over the counter sleeping pills to help.

It's great he has made through 6 days already, keep us updated.

DEPENDS IF HE IS AN ADDICT OR IS HE TAKING SLEEPING PILLS AS PRESCRIBED AND IF SO ONLY USE THEM FOR A WEEK OR SO AND TRY WITHOUT.. I DID SLEEPING MEDS FOR A WEEK TO HELP THEN FLUSHED THE REST. IT DEPENDS ON HIM AND HIS STRENGTH.  HOLD THE MEDICINE IF IT'LL HELP HIM AND IF HE DOESN'T TRUST HIMSELF... PRAY ABOUT IT BUT THIS IS MY ADVICE.  RICK

6 days is awesome and there's nothing wrong with sleep meds to help him thru this difficult time. Just make sure he doesn't start abusing those. Are the sleep meds helping?
