tapering off of vicodin

My husband is trying to get off vicoden.  He was clean for about 10 days and then started right back again.  We talked with a pharmacist about decreasing the dose.  He was taking about 30 10/325 a day.  He is also seeing a substance abuse counselor 2x/week.  Any advice on how to make the withdrawal symptoms more bearable?
Thanks

Thank you for all of your input!  It has been helpful and when he runs out of the pills, and he will because he hasn't really been very accurate about how many he was taking, the thomas recipe and the other protocol  will be very helpful.  I think that this is going to be a long slow process.  His SA counselor has a lot of experience and I have gone w/ him to an apt.  The good news is he opened the forum today and was reading everyones comments and own addiction issues.  So I think that it helps to know that he is not alone in this RX hell!

ooohh. 10 whole days and to go back again. he must be really having a tough time.
the counselor is great and maybe that will make it easier for the next time.

there is always the physical to get through- and there really is no easy way out.
and then there is the mental - things that have to be dealt with , some of the reasons why people are taking the drugs other than for pain.

so give the counselor a little bit of time and carefully planning for the quit helps too.

Cattalina summed it up pretty well.  If he's seeing a substance abuse counselor they sould also have some suggestions for you?

In the bottom right corner of the screen - check the Thomas Recipe and amino acid protocal.  He needs to drink lots of water - dehydration makes wds worse.  Alot of people find that vitamins help alot also.  Hot showers when he's feeling the sweating/cold shakes.  Try to stay away from caffeine and nicotine - stimulants also make wds worse.  Tylenol/advil/aleve for body aches, Nyquil always helped me to fall asleep, immodium is a great help with stomach cramps, etc.  If he's tapering down slowly in dosage the wds shoudn't be too bad, but these things will help.  This can be a tiresome process for both of you - hang in there & good luck!
