tapering verses CT

lots of questions on this and wanted to get some input..k ...40 my hydo or oxy daily per day...can be tapered or CT...want feedback here...80 mg hydro or oxy...can be as I have done that with a fast taperr...20-30 hydo or oxys to me seems a possible taper or may need to look into suboxone especially if if relapsed before... i have seen several 15 pill a day hydros ct or taper without suboxone...everyone is different but i see so many questions...almost seems like it should be some kind of cut and dry rule...but there is no way i guess

Yes...i think some think that suboxone can solve everything and make everything totally painless....I have gathered that it may be a much better choice than methadone ...just piecing stuff together and learning myself along the way

I need to get busy but it's so hard to be inside when the spring weather has finally come! I should have it done by the time he's home. If not it will be shortly after.

brian, i think you are right.  some seem to think it is just an overall cure to opiate addiction.  it is not.  but it is the lesser of 2 evils for some lol.  it should definately be used as a last resort in my opinion.

p.s. jonathan is coming home in 35 days...you better get busy.

I agree with you worried. I think sub should only be used as a last resort after trying at least a few times by tapering or going cold turkey. Sub has to be tapered too and you will experience withdrawals also from what I have heard. I do think that sub is for some people because quite a few on here have tried quitting on there own before. It seems some think sub is the cure all but need to realize they will have to get off of that at some point if they want to be completely pill free. I think it is a great choice as a last resort though. Just my opinion and I have never used it. This is just my thoughts after reading people's experience on here.

The tapering was hard. It takes a lot of commitment. But I was only on them for a few months os maybe that made it easier.

I quit going on 3 months ago...I did a quick taper and quit/cheated on my taper tho and would rateher have gone CT but needed a few days off work..I was asking as so many people ask or post about what they should do....like i know there is no cut and dry way to do it and everyone is different...but i see people who had a 40 mg/hydro a day for 6 months habit thinking about suboxone and have never tried to quit before with a taper or CT...just wondering what everyone else thought

Lexapro is an anti depressant/antianxiety drug.
It worked well for me for a couple months. it starts working in 1 or 2 weeks.

I took flexeril and it helped me. Or maybe it just made me sleepy. I also took lyrica. That was proably what helped the RLS as well.

Bobby brought up a good point about the seizures. Not everyone gets them but if you are prone to seizures you have to be careful about going ct off of anything. I know there have been a few people on here that said they had a seizure when going cold turkey. So if that's the case, you almost have to taper to a lower dose before coming completely off the pills. And if you don't know for sure, you just have to be very careful.

I tapered. I just can't go cold turkey. I had the wds the whole time but they were bearable. I started Lexparo before for the anxiety and then had muscle relaxers for RLS> That was the worst for me i think.

I agree that everyone is diffrent..to bad there isn't a rule...I was like bmc it didn't matter the dose I felt the same when i would try to c/t, but because of my seizures i found out that i couldn't do it that way, but i did go 4 day's c/t and then had to go back on them and i couldn't tapper myself so doctor did it in 4 weeks...every week he gave me a script of a weaker pill he would drop me 5ml a week and stayed on taking them 8 times a day untill he finally put me on 2ml and then was going to give me a diffrent one and thats when i finally threw them out thinking it would be ok and it was but i still believe it or not had bad w/d coming off the low dose but did notice i had w/ds threw the whole tappering just not as bad..but it dose drag it on and on.

I hydro off and on over the past few years. I have went cold turkey off of 40mg a day, 60mg a day, 150mg a day, and over 250 mg a day.  I honestly didn't notice a difference in withdrawals from the 40 mg a day to the 250 mg a day. It was just as bad with the 40 mg and the 250 mg. I have tapered once and it really helped. I didn't even really have any physical withdrawals except for a little lack of energy. There was some mental though. So in my opinion I think one should taper only if they have the willpower to do so. I know it takes a lot of will power. That's why I had to go cold turkey the other times. If the pills are there, I take them. There are some that may need to use suboxone but many have not. I just think it depends on the person and what they have going on in life such as stress that could trigger relapse. Everyone is different. I don't anyone should turn to sub until they have tried and tried to taper or go cold turkey at least a few times. I think it should be used only as a last result. This is just my opinion. Suboxone as a last result after numerous tries at tapering or cold turkey.

I was on oxycodone. I had been on and off them for a while and always got a little sick when I stopped and never even knew I was going thru wd's. I was happier when I didn't know :)

It's true that it's different for everyone.  I was taking anywhere from 6 to 10 oxycontins 80 mg XR a day and I quit cold turkey.  I am an all or nothing kind of person so tapering was not an option.  I will be clean one year and two months the end of this month.
I think you have to examine your situation and be honest with yourself.  Do you have the self-discipline to taper?  And at those amounts you mentioned, you could go cold turkey.
If you want to read my story, just let me know and I'll send it to you.  (I got hooked on the oxys because of a horrific car accident I had on July 4, 2004.)
Good luck,

It's hard when there is not cut and dry rules to this. This process does not come with a direction book so that makes it harder. I found I was on a slow taper process until the day came when I ran out and made it ct. It wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be and I was even able to work. But I felt and I'm sure looked like a mess during that week and didn't even want to look in the mirror and see what I looked like. I did use valium which helped relax me and I think that got me over the hard part. Knowing that I was going to run out the few days before when I had energy I did work around the house and prepared the best I could and that helped. So when I did run out everything like the laundry and so on was done and it was one less thing to worry about.

Whatever way you decide to do good luck. Do like I did and try to get everything done before hand so that when you start to feel better you don't have a ton of things to catch up with.

I totally agree..everyone is different but the lack of will power is what got us all into this mess in the first place. I had good intentions everytime i filled that stupid rx but never could taper..Everything I have ever stopped doing..smoking,pills etc..has been cold turkey..Thats the only way for me..Unles you have someone that you trust that isn't on them too then tapering might work but as hard as it is it seems like just getting it over with and feeling like **** for a week or 2 is worth just being done..

for me i had to c/t...if i had 2 oxys i would say ill do one and save the other for 2morow, 2 hours later im crushing the 2nd one. i had no willpower against them the high was never enough. if i had a pill or money there was no slowing down, only option was to shut it down. it depends on the person and their situation

very true .. everyone is different in some ways. I wouldn't be able to. I was on 30-40 norco's a day and I couldn't taper. I would tell myself every single time I got pills that i would just use them to taper and before I knew it i was out again. I just had to c/t
