Is it possible to become "immune" to a certain type of Alcohol?

So, here's the deal.  I had been drinking 90 proof vodka.. 5-10 shots a night for several years and it seems to have completely lost its ability to get me a good buzz, let alone drunk. I can drink and drink, until I'm sick the next day, but still be completely sober.

Yet, I can have a couple of beers and be three sheets to the wind...I'm consuming much less alcohol, so it doesn't quite make sense.  Is there such a thing as becoming tolerant to a particular type of alcohol?

There is no good ending to that kind of alcohol consumption. The amount of time that it takes to  sustain damage to your organs and your brain varies by individual, but we all have to pay sooner or later.   Yes, it's true that the  type of alcohol can vary in terms of the effect on different types of people. But your body has grown accustomed to  large quantities of vodka, and that's not a good thing. Stop playing games with your life.

I struggle every day. I know I have a problem. I'm a sous chef in the food industry and it's always just been what I turn to for comfort. I have two young boys and they are my world. I want to watch them graduate. Get married and walk them down the aisle in marriage. Lord please give me the strength.

Thanks to everyone here for the kind words of encouragement.  I'm still here and still struggling. I'm not sure If i'm really prepared to "hear" what is being said to me..but I'm determined that this will not beat me... I'm just not sure if I'm ready to give this part of me up yet... in a way, it's all that keeps me going.. if that makes sense.

I am just jumping in here to encourage you.  It can be done.  Lots of us are walking proof.  You can get rid of the craving and get high on life without the booze.  It will be easier and better for you to stop now than later< after more damage is done to your body.  You have received some good advice on this thread.  I read then all.  Rodd44 is right on the money.  Don't ever give up, keep coming back.  Go to out patient, or in patient, AA or whatever it takes.  TJack  Oh and just my thinking on this but i believe our bodies build up a tolerance where it takes more and more of the drink to get us to our buzz and numbness.

If your drinking isnt affecting your life as whole why did you apologize and say it was a combination of drinking and lack of control?  You have to answer the question that you asked us....Is it really that bad?  Time to get real honest with yourself..........sara

I had a similar problem and the doctors said that my  tolerance of alcohol was diminished and this is why I could no longer get the buzz, this is common in the latter stages of alcoholism. If the fact that you will die if you don't stop drinking is not motivation enough to stop think about the people you will leave behind. Would you class yourself as being a selfish person. time to do some sole serching.......before it is to late. You can have a life beyond your wildest dreams if you so wish, it is your call, only you can chose witch path to take.....

I'm sorry about last night's post. It was a combination of the alcohol and my lack of control.  it's not all as bad as it sounds, I 'm still drinking, but not nearly at the level I had been.  Is there a safe level of consumption?.. I mean, I know it's not doing me good.. but if a little bit at the end of the day gets me through to the next, and it doesn't have any ill effects on my life as a whole, .. its' it really that bad?

the key thing is finding a reason to stop. its obvious you know you SHOULD stop, but thats not enough. do u have kids/partner/ dreams you havnt fulfilled yet? find a reason, and use it as a goal. otherwise you wont be able to stop.

Yes you can stop.  Check out the AA meetings in your area or inpatient/ outpatient treatment facilities.  If you dont do something about this your body will just shut down and that will be the end.  Please get some help........sara

You may not be getting a buzz but your liver will not be thanking you.  Are you looking to change your drinking habits?

Reactions to all psychoactive substances can vary & depend somewhat on your own state of mind.  There have been studies where people have been given non alcoholic substances & lead to believe they are consuming alcohol.  They all reported feeling drunk & behaved as if this was the case.

Although you report feeling sober, it is likely that your cognitive skills & reaction times will still be negatively effected.
