Can shellfish affect hearing and joints?

When I eat scallops or shrimp I get temporary hearing loss and a ringing in my ears. When my sister eats shellfish, she gets temporary "lockjaw," or an extreme pain in her "jaw joints." For both of us, this lasts 24-36 hours. We assume this is a food allergy and might be hereditary. But what is the underlying cause, why does this assumed allergy manifest itself differently in us -- and is it indeed hereditary?

Yes, I agree with above poster.   You may be having a toxic joint reaction ... the synovium, etc. gets swollen in a type of reactive arthritis .... what is now delayed reaction can one day progress to immediate and life threatening with repeated exposure .. would treat it with caution and avoid it completely.

Allergic reactions can manifest themselves differently in each individual.

Both the hearing loss and joint pain are indeed allergic reactions. And yes, allergies do have a tendency to be hereditary.

I strongly suggest that both you and your sister completely stay away from all shellfish.
The more you consume it, the worse the allergy can become. Shellfish are known to cause anaphylaxis. It's just not worth it, in opinion.
