I am inquiring about the MELISA metal testing now, but what has gotten me very upset is thinking about having the Rod in my femur removed. Is this done is it awful. I guess nothing couldn't be  much worse than my life now.

Hello, maybe you can help me. I had acdf w/titanium implant on August 25, 2011 and have developed some strange symptoms. I have a terrible sweat that smells like metal(nauseating odor) that no one else smells, it wakes me out of a sound sleep, I am exhausted all the time, my head itches(tried several shampoos, nothing helps) some swelling of the lips and tongue, my ear lobes hurt, trouble swallowing(feels like ther is an egg in my throat) awful joint pain, and on some days i shake all over and can hardly stand up. Didn't have this before surgery. Could I be allergic to the titanium. I had completely forgotten that i shattered by ankle about 11 years ago and had several titanium plated and screws that had to be removed, my anlke was swollen and could not bare weight, and it tiched all the time. Is there anything short of surgery that will help me? This is really bothering me most of the time. Thank you

Hello,
It is true that if MELISA comes out to be positive, then the implant has to be removed as it may be causing the allergic reaction. However it is better to get the implant changed if it is causing a metal allergy.
Hope it helps.Take care and regards.
