Dark chocolate...not just for pleasure anymore

According to the website, Nutritiondata.com, a one ounce serving of dark chocolate contains 19 percent of the US RDA for iron. Yet an ounce of beef sirloin only contains 3 percent.

Is dark chocolate really that high in iron? Why hasn’t anyone told me this?

Data from USDA National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference shows: Chocolate, dark, 70-85 percent cacao solids, value per 100 grams is 11.90 milligrams of iron. Beef, bottom sirloin, tri-tip roast, separable lean and fat, trimmed to 0″ fat, all grades, cooked, roasted, value per 100 grams is 1.66 milligrams of iron. Beef, ground, 70 percent lean meat / 30 percent fat, crumbles, cooked, pan-browned, value per 100 grams is 2.48 milligrams of iron. So these two information sources state that dark chocolate does contain more iron than some cuts of beef, and not just a little more. (I’m currently holding a dark chocolate bar and the wrapper says 100 grams is 3.5 ounces

And starbucks makes some really great dark chocolate. Hey, I need Iron, my hemoglobin is low. What can I say?

Peggy, BAD news! My son cancelled his trip to Belgium and is only going to Greece I guess he will bring back Baklava . Please send me some of your dark chocolate.

Agreed. Dark Chocolate is great. In moderation. Something I could not accomplish. Now, for the health benefits (so I think), I just take a couple tablespoons of low temperature processed cacao powder in my coffee. With stevia of course. It is actually pretty good.

   My son loves eating chocolate, but has tested very high in oxalic acid, so he needs to limit his chocolate consumption. However, he needs iron! He is also a tea drinker, which is also high in oxalic acid. :(   (High oxalic acid levels can cause calcium loss).

Dark chocolate is also loaded with antioxidants, and is traditionally used as a stomach remedy.  On the other hand, it's very high in caffeine, and if you're eating candy, of course you have a tremendous amount of sugar and other not so good stuff depending on the quality.  Without the sugar dark chocolate is very bitter.  The higher the chocolate content, the less sugar and other stuff.  A healthier overall source of iron can be had, i.e., beets, parsley, dandelion greens, watercress, seaweeds, etc., though of course they aren't as much fun, especially given that dark chocolate is also a mild aphrodisiac because of its effect on both pheromones and pleasure centers in the brain.

I found some the other day....oh my stars. It is just tooooooo good.

It is by a company called NewTree. 73% with some cherry flavoring added.

I like to put mine in the freezer, and just eat small amounts at a time. Makes the joy last longer, and not getting all those calories....

OH!! and don't let me forget to add....the iron, oh yeah!
