I am also considering damiana, has anyone had any good results with that for depression?

Could damiana be better for my depression than rhodiola rosea ?

Has anyone had any good results with this?

Thanks.

Thanks, will keep trying and researching a bit longer.

Had a psychologist but she betrayed my trust.

Tried 5htp, worked well for a while but started giving me palps, will stick to rhodiola for a while and maybe add valerian later on in the day when the fast pulse starts.

self treating lyme too which doesn't help.

Thanks.

All I can say is, it's always your call.  I ended up on meds, and while they helped, they also destroyed my life.  The real cure is therapy, and that means you doing the work.  There is no magic pill.  Natural medicine takes work because it works on the whole body, not just on the symptoms.  But there's no guarantee anything will work, not meds, not therapy, not natural medicine.  A lot of formulas out there, like the Serenity one, although there are actually more than one by that name, I wouldn't use because they combine things that need to be taken at different times and aren't the best combinations, but then here you have testimony of someone for whom it worked.  Of course, I understand that a serious chronic case like you and I is much different from the occasional sufferer, and believe me, I empathize.  I can only say that if I knew in the beginning what I know now about natural remedies, I would have tried them long before the medication, but I didn't.  But many do well on them, too.  Truth is, there is on one answer to disorders without a known cause, which is most of them.  I do wish you the best whatever you do.

Dont go back to traditional meds, read up about herbal remedies, I have got a great store I go to called Sprouts they  have computers and tech people to answer your questions, I dont suffer form depression but I know many who do, and the get horrible side effects from prescribed meds, cant get off them without dreadful with drawal. You have to persevere, I have had some anxiety and panic in my life, I found, 5HTP worked well, also Sam -E used a lot in Europe, there is one called the Serenity formula that does work well..Go online there is much help and info thats what I do .Dont get dispirited , get tough,

Maybe i'll just go back on conventional meds, this is too complicated for me.

The only naturopaths i've heard of are expensive and I although young I have been retired from my employment because of severe medical issues.

Have ordered two books on natural antidepressants but am seriously considering taking my docs advice and going back on my meds.

The only one that really worked well for me without the annoying side effects was dutonin but got taken off the market as it was destroying peoples livers. citalopram put tons of weight on me and stopped working after about 14 years and prozac put weight on, trazadone and escitalopram gave me palpatations.

Have been given effexor xl just incase i decide to take it but reviews i've read and discontiuation syndrome have seriously put me off that too.

That encouraged me to try the natural route but this isn't working either.

Thanks

I think you're looking at this the wrong way.  I strongly encourage you to consult a naturopath, herbalist, practitioner of TCM, somebody who can work up a program for you.  Individual herbs aren't how herbalism is practiced, instead combinations are used.  It would be something directly for anxiety, something for depression, something for your adrenals, possibly something to clean out you liver, exercise, meditation, diet.  It's very unlikely one herb will solve such complex problems.  It's more of a process.  Damiana is generally used for male energy.  A woman would use it if she were too yin, for example if she lacked sexual desire, but generally it's a male herb in traditional Chinese medicine.  Would it help?  Only if your depression is from an overly yin condition.  Again, you can try it, but there are people out there who can guide you through this who are well educated in what's available and how to combine them and change them to suit you.  Good luck.
