It is possible to have panic attacks on 1 dose of medicine! I was so sensitive to meds when I started, that every single med gave me side effects the first day, except paxil. On 1/16th of the lowest dose, taken in liquid, Prozac made me feel crazy nervous within a few hours! Studchick

I also doubt that the Prozac is responsible for your panic attack, at least not directly. While some people have adverse reactions and many have at least some symptoms, I doubt that you would have a panic attack because of one 20mg dose.

I've been on Celexa before, with Ativan, and it didn't help enough with the anxiety. The Ativan was just a bandaid and the Celexa wasn't doing its job, so they switched me to Prozac. The Prozac wasn't doing a good enough job, so they added Wellbutrin, still with the Ativan. The Ativan stopped working, so they replaced that with Klonopin. And added Guanfacine for nightmares. I got fed up and recently switched psychiatrists.

Anyway, Celexa is supposed to be a good choice for people with prominent anxiety along with depression (also, it has very few side effects-- probably the best of the SSRI's as far as that goes), so I'd give it a chance. It didn't work for me, but it might for you-- my new psychiatrist is thinking that my original diagnosis wasn't apt, so Celexa was probably never a good choice for me. Make sure you're vocal about what you're experiencing. I've been on Prozac for two years, started out on 20mg, now I'm on 80mg, and I don't think it's ever really helped. I should have been more forceful with my doctor.

Best of luck to you. Celexa might be just the thing you need. You'll be in my thoughts.

As sillygirl stated, I also seriously doubt that one dose of Prozac would cause you to have an anxiety attack UNLESS you were fearful of that particular medication to begin with or possibly had an extreme adverse reaction to it. For those of us with anxiety, starting a new med can be a fairly anxious time. We wonder and worry about side effects and will often talk ourselves into a panic attack.

Citalopram, also known as Celexa, is an antidepressant, (SSRI) but one of it's off label uses is for panic disorder, so it will help you with both if depression is the primary symptom.
Prozac is rx'd primarily for depression and really has no affinity for anxiety/panic disorders.

I have not taken either Prozac or Celexa, so I have no personal experience with either of these drugs. Hopefully others will respond who do have first hand experience with both.

We can offer you our opinions and share our experiences, but this is something that you need to work out with your doctor. We all react to medication differently and sometimes it takes a period of trial and error before we find the one that is best for us.
Also bear in mind that virtually all psych meds are going to have SOME side effects, so discuss those in depth with your doctor. Often we just have to grin and bear the side effects until our bodies adjust to the medication..........so don't be too quick to give up on a particular med.
Staying in close contact with your doctor during the adjustment period really helps.
I wish you the very best
Peace

Everyone's system is different, so hard to say if one 20mg tablet of prozac could be responsible for the panic attacks you had at night.

Not knowing your history or why doctor is treating you, it is difficult to respond with clarity.  I don't know what citalopram is. An anti anxiety med?

If anxiety is the prominent symptom in your depression, there are other more suitable antidepressants.   Talk to your doctor about this.

In my case prozac worsened my anxiety: I would stay wide awake night after night, sleeping in daytime.  So became more withdrawn from life.  Not a good thing for someone with agoraphobia.

Hope someone has experience with drug you mentioned.  This is just one woman's outlook.
