Bipolar meds and weight gain

I have been taking seroquel for about 10 years.  It works very well  BUT I am very upset about the weight I have gained.  Nothing seems to help and Im nearing fifty (post menaposal) .  Has anyone had success with a med to treat their bipolar that doesn't cause you to look like a float in the Macy's day parade?  THANKS

I'm on serequel and I gained 10 pounds in 5 months. It *****! But I'd rather be a little curvy than suffering

There's a book called the Anti-Depressant Survival Guide.  I don't really like the diet in it, but it is something at least by a psychiatrist who is out of the mainstream and understands the limits of medication.  It's by Hedaya.

Oh geez, I don't mean to laugh, but the Macy's day parade comment was funny!  I'm glad to see that you still have a sense of humor!  :0)

Some of the psych meds (many of them actually) can cause weight gain, and you've got the double whammy of age not helping either.  I'm 42 and have recently started a diet program.  I'm doing great, but man is it a LOT harder in our 40s to lose weight than our 20s or 30s!  It's frustrating to say the least!

Have you tried making changes in your diet and exercise routine?  Does the Seroquel help with your bipolar symptoms?  Are you well maintained on it?  Do you experience any symptoms related to the menopause?  Are you on any kind of hormone therapy?

It's really a tough situation, I feel for you, because on one hand, while the weight gain is bothersome, if a med is really helping, you hate to mess with that.  I personally would rather be on the heavy side and have my anxiety well controlled, but that's me.

If you haven't yet, I would really recommend trying to see what kind of progress you can see with some changes.  If you've already done that (and REALLY made a concerted effort), then I would recommend talking to your doctor about your options.  Another medication may be a better choice, but again,m please be cautious about making a change if you've done really well on the Seroquel.

Keep us posted on how you're doing, okay?
