Doctor wants me to go back to work

Hi there,

I'm a 29yr old girl and was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in May 2013 but diagnosed with Hashimoto's in Jan this year. I currently receive Levothyroxine but am not doing very well on it.

I have been signed off by my doctor for 3 weeks as having "anxiety symptoms" - which is partially true as I get OCD, depression, mood swings, trouble sleeping etc. but I have put that down to my illness.

This same doctor is now pressuring me to get back into work but I don't feel anywhere near ready yet and I'm not looking forward to seeing him next week to be given another lecture into me finding a job.

I'm still waiting on a claim for employment support for long-term health conditions but I've still not heard anything back. I'm not panicking exactly, but I just don't know where I stand at present. Most of the time when I go to the doctor now I feel like I'm wasting their time with my problems.

Thanks

Jo xxx

Thanks for your reply.

My last job was as an administrative assistant at a top insurance company. I took voluntary redundancy due to how poorly I felt, you see.

I still am unhappy as I'm struggling with my medication and have just been told by a nutritionist that I am lactose intolerant.

What was your last job and will it be hard to find another?

I see you have recently been feeling very unhappy. "I now feel as though my reasons are completely unjustified and I feel like I should be locked up somewhere right now." http://www.medhelp.org/posts/Depression/Cant-go-on/show/2113753#post_10038096

Write back.

Hashimoto's is clearly no reason to not work, but you will find getting the levels of your medication just right to be difficult and endocrinologists not very attentive -- my wife has had this problem.  But sitting around focused on this so much won't help, either, which is why your doctor wants you back involved in the outside world.  Assuming you like working and your job -- perhaps part of this is you not really wanting to go back to what you were doing.  But to the doctor, part of your healing is getting you back to doing what the doctor assumes you want to be doing, which is what you were doing before.  Medically, this disease is with you for the rest of your life and you will be having to play with the meds the rest of your life.  Hope this works out for you, but don't let it take your life over completely.
